So far I have ripped about 7 Blu-ray disks to MKV, and playback the MKV files just fine.
But this one (Journey to the Edge of the Universe) only plays back audio only. I have re-done it a few times and get the same result.
I also made an .iso, and a MakeMKV backup of the disk.
The MakeMKV backup shows 22 .m2ts files, only 3 show video information, but MakeMKV only created one MKV file...no errors are shown.
Where do I start trouble shooting...or do I simply have a bad disk?

Hi!
Turn on the "Debug log" and re-rip the disc. Submit the log.
Is the disc an original, commercial Blu-ray disc?

Have you analyzed the MKV created to see what sort of video is supposedly in there? I use MediaInfo GUI ; after it is installed just right click on any media file and choose the media info option.
It's possible that there is an unusal video encode in there. I've had this trouble once in a while (Back before I moved to Windows 7). Haven't needed any special codecs since moving to W7.

I am out of town...I will try that, I will also try to reencode off the original commerical store bought disk.
Re: Nat Geo- Journey to the Edge of the Universe
I looked into it... it turns out that there are numerous reports of trouble playing this file. Something about a level three VC-1 encode.
Generally, PowerDVD 9, 10 play it fine. MPC-HC x86 will also do it if configured to use the matroska splitter, according to one forum.
So, for those following this, the issues aren't with the rip, but with playback of an exotic encoding of the video.

Thanks. I hope there will be a solution in the future.
...actually I didn't even think of using MPC-HC...

This was interesting so I borrowed a copy to examine (no worries, I'm not making any illegal copies of things).
Turns out the video is indeed 1080i (as in interlaced, not 1080p) encoded in VC-1. That is a VERY difficult combination of resolution/encoding to find a decoder for.
I played it just fine as a disc in PowerDVD (I've got an old version, I think 7. something). But I didn't find any way to play the m2TS file and I didn't bother with a rip to a different container. MPC-HC and a few other players all failed to render it.
Basically, this is one of those rare discs that you pretty much have to play as a disc (or as an .iso image of a disc) or else re-encode to something more common. The last time I hit one of these was the several-disc series of Torchwood: Children of the Earth. Maybe a year ago or more. Very uncommon, fortunately.
Good luck with it.
