Maybe a dumb question, but, wouldn't I expect to see read errors when the disc is being scanned?

No. Not until it starts trying to copy bit for bit.

In addition to what crowfax said, the scanning process looks at the directory structure of the disk, and validates the "pieces". It only reads a fraction of the disk, but any read errors found there would be reported during the scan.

I've just bought it on Blu-Ray from eBay, and have the same problem. It seems to be on the first disc only, as the other 4 out of the 5 discs in the box set are fine.
Did anyone find an answer?

I've cleaned the disc. Looks new. I may have to take it down to CEX for a thorough clean.
Tried other blu-rays - No problems with any of them.
Plays perfectly in the Blu-ray player.

Here's a small sample of the 336 errors from
DISC ONE (5 files, 1 saved 'The Broken Ear')
Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00011.m2ts' at offset '660142080'

Same issue...

However I was able to pull The Black Island, The Blue Lotus, and The Broken Ear from the disc by selecting the titles individually.

Tintin in America and Cigars of the Pharaoh will stop around 378.5m.

Wow! So it seems to be a bad pressing on Disc 1 only then?

I’m not sure if it’s the disc or MKV at this point, the Disc 1 of the DVD set acts in a similar manner.
