Harry Potter 7 Part 2 and The Descendants

Post by GG007 »

I tried ripping this disc twice and got the same errors in the same places. The disc is brand new so I am not sure what is going on. I had similar errors when trying to rip "The Descendants" earlier today. I thought at first I had a bad disc until I ran into the same problems with this Harry Potter disc. Is this a MakeMKV problem or a problem with my drive's firmware? I have not run into any problems like this before. I also ripped "The Artist" on Blu-Ray today with no problems whatsoever.

Here is my drive info which is a Pioneer BDR-206 in an OWC package: (Mercury Elite Pro)

Bad disc or failing drive. There is no copy protection that would stop you reading the disc, which is what your drive is reporting.

I got my replacement of Harry Potter 7 Part 2 and this copy won't even open at all.

I get the following error from MakeMKV:

Can't read AACS VID from disc - most likely current AACS host certificate is revoked by your drive
The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted

I just order a Samsung SE-506AB/TSBD 6X USB2.0 External Slim Blu-ray Writer Drive from Amazon after reading that it works great with a Mac and also with MakeMKV.

Only cost $100.00 and I am a PRIME member so if it has the same problem as my expensive OWC/Pioneer drive I can always return it. I will report back on whether or not this new drive is able to rip these two problematic movies that my "Top of the Line" OWC Mercury Elite Pro can't.

I have that drive. It works fine.

The error you're now getting means the AACS certificate has been revoked from your drive. I've never had the issue myself, so I'm not sure what to suggest. Perhaps someone else can shed some light on the problem.

Glad to hear it! :)

I read a lot of good reviews about this drive on Amazon and the price was right, so I figured what the heck! ;)

As you said.... Hopefully Mike or some of the other more technical folks can chime in on what might be going on with my Pioneer BD-205 with regards to all these errors I am getting on just certain Blu-Ray movies. I ripped a couple of other BD discs today with the 205 and they ripped perfectly with no errors, so I am totally confused about this problem.

If the Samsung works on these occasional problem discs that would be great. It isn't as fast as my 205, so I plan to leave both of them connected to my Mac Mini Server and switch back and forth as needed.

I'll post back when I get the Samsung and if it reads these two movies.

Cheers. :)

Because I couldn't log in with the original one after several attemps. I haven't changed my login info but my password wouldn't work.

Just wanted to update and close this thread with my final report.

My new Samsung drive was able to succesfully rip my Harry Potter and The Descendants discs with no hardware or encryption errors!

For whatever reason, this $100.00 drive was able to read these two discs while my $280.00 PWC Pioneer BD-205 was not. Going to be keeping both drives hooked up to my Mac Mini and will use the Samsung as a backup for the occasional rips where the BD-205 fails to read the disc. Otherwise, the BD-205 is overall faster at ripping than the Samsung, but not by as much as I would have expected based on the 12x speed versus the 6x speed of the Samsung.
