MKV Backup Stutter in video file

Post by mattkingston »

Hi all.
I have made several attempts to make a full backup of a BD in MakeMKV.
The backup appears to work just fine however when I play it the video pauses briefly every few minutes at the exact same place. I believe this rues out network or hardware issues and points more towards the file(s) themselves.

After some digging in the BDMV folders, namely the ""STREAM" where all the individual video files are, I have found that this pause is between two different AVCHD files in the backup.

As I understand it, the BDs are authored in this way, hence the individual files.

So, how to I prevent this pause? It doesn't happen on direct playback of a BD disc, only from the BDMV backup via network.

I have my NAS wired (1GB Eth) to my Homatics Box R 4K Plus running Dune HD which I understand is one of the better media player for ISOs, Backups etc.

I assume somewhere that Dune is not buffering these files ahead in order to remove the pause between file changes? or maybe there is a setting in MakeMKV I can change?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think there are any settings you can change in MakeMKV. If you make a decrypted backup of a blu-ray you'll get a folder structure with the contents of the disc copied into it just like you've described.

I don't have any experience with Homatics hardware or the Dune HD software, so I'm just speculating. Is your Box R 4K Plus on ethernet or WiFi? If WiFi, what happens if you put it on ethernet?

What happens if you put a blu-ray backup on an SSD (or a fast USB stick) and connect it to the USB 3 port on the box and play the movie from it locally?

Finally, if you use MakeMKV to create a .mkv file from your decrypted backup, MakeMKV is effectively remuxing all the .m2ts files that make up the movie into a single .mkv file. If you play that .mkv file from your NAS does the brief pause disappear?

Hi.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes network is fast enough and as this pause happens in the same place on every replay of the backup I can be confident the HW setup is fine but the files themselves are causing the issue.

This is further affirmed after checking the individual AVCHD files in the STREAM folder as this pause happens when the next file is played but obviously should be seamless as it would be if playing the BD disc directly in a player.

So far all my other backups work fine with no such pause noticed so perhaps it was bad authoring of the BD or maybe makeMKV simply struggled with this particular disc.

The disc in question is Alien from the Anthology Collection.
On a side note, I noticed that the generic SVQ was used during the backup, not a disc specific one.
I'm not ot sure if that is relevant to my issue though...

Thanks again.
