Big Hero 6 - Always Fails, have tried multiple discs/copies

Post by TheMountainThatRoars »

Hello,

Really hoping someone can point me in the right direction here. I have tried to rip my retail copy of BH6, a Redbox version, a Netflix version, and today a copy from my local Library. My retail disc has never been physically played until I put it in the BR drive (we used the DVD). I have cleaned all of them with mild detergent and a soft cloth as well as solutions marketed for disc repair.

The drive has ripped my entire library without issue, so I don't believe its the drive.

The full info is below. I would really appreciate any suggestions you all have.

Thank you!

Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00300.m2ts' at offset '12365789184'
Error 'OS error - STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR' occurred while reading '\Device\CdRom0' at offset '12365789184'
These errors are consistent with a USB drive that is hitting "over speed" for the available power. The drive starts spinning too fast, the power available is less than needed, and the drive resets, mid-rip. It then is off-line until it finishes the reset. But the top of the log, where it gives the drive model, isn't in what you posted, so this is just a guess.

Is the error always at the same offset, or does it move around if you try to rip multiple times? If it is an actual error in the disk, the offset will be the same, plus-or-minus a few counts. But if it jumps around, AND you are using an external USB drive that is powered by the USB cable, the fix is to plug into a fully-powered port.

If it came with a 2-head cable, the manufacturer knew it was marginal on a single USB port, but it does no good to plug in the two plugs into the same hub, if it doesn't have its own power supply.

So, if I plugged the second USB into a wall outlet (phone charger) would that help to offset or am I just out of luck until I can get a bay drive?

Also, thank you so much for the quick response. Very much appreciated.

Edit: I will test it again to make sure, and see if it fails in the same place again.

If you have two (or more) USB ports on your computer, the two-headed cable should work. Exceptions are laptops, which often only guarantee full USB power when plugged in and charging.

MOST OFTEN, plugging ONE port into the computer itself will be enough to power drives made in the last couple of years. Newer drives will meet their speed specifications within the 2.5w of power a USB2 port has. If you have a USB3 port on the computer, which will "almost" always have at least 5w of power, that will work, too.

A hub, unfortunately, takes "one unit of power" (that 2.5w) and splits some of it to itself, and some to each thing plugged in, so the best you can hope fore is "less than one unit of power". Even separately-powered hubs do not always provide "full power" to all ports; The USB3 hub I got recently has 7 USB3 ports, but the power supply is only 5 amps... To fully power all 7 it should have at least 7 amps. (but I don't need that much power for my usage)

You'll only notice a problem when the drive spins up to top speed, and few applications can spin a drive faster than maybe 3 or 4x speed. Guess which one can?

Note that Mike has acknowledged that it would be a good idea to provide some sort of speed limit in MakeMKV. After a couple of years, though, I'm not counting on it happening very soon.

Thanks for the explanation. Both USB ports I am using are 3.0 but I never thought to check to see if they are sharing power between the split cable.

I'll give it a shot with one cable and may as well try a wall outlet to cover all bases.

If worse comes to worse, I'll find someone with an internal drive willing to let me borrow it for an hour.

Again, many thanks for the help. I very much appreciate it.

So I solved my issue with a new internal LG BR drive. And just today found out that Pioneer has a "quiet mode" that you have to disable with a driver. Ah well, the new drive rips at least twice as fast as the old external.

So, thanks for helping me target the issue. I really appreciate the assist. BH6 ripped perfectly on the first go round. :D
