The issue here can be a couple of things. Start by wiping the disk with a damp cloth, soft cotton or microfiber, to make sure it is clean.

Given the particular errors, I'm biased towards an issue with the drive spinning too fast for the available power, and it shuts down momentarily. If it's a USB-powered drive, make sure it is plugged into a powered hub.

The fact that it moves around means that the system IS able to work around some of the errors by retrying, so increasing the retries in Preferences->IO to a higher number might make it work.
