Re: If you're experiencing rip errors, please read here first!
Still the same issue with my french Blu-Ray as well. Tried it with several different Blu-Ray Drives, internal and external Drives. On Laptops and Desktopcomputers. With Windows and Linux. With different software aswell. But i'm getting the same error over and over with one difference. MakeMKV on a Desktop Computer with Linux and an internal Asus Blu-Ray Drive BW-16D1HT didn't stop ripping after the error appeard. It tried to rip the rest of the disc, but also with no success. I'm out of ideas now.

I have started to see this error message about ten days ago. For a while, quitting the program and re-starting it a few hours later worked. However, since yesterday that doesn't work anymore. Interestingly, when MakeMKV starts to show this error message, the program won't accept Blu-day discs it has already accepted in the past. Also, it's possible that the program shows this error message a few times in a row but then accepts the disc the next time. It might be a coincidence but I think it started with my latest MacOS update.

Re: If you're experiencing rip errors, please read here first!
My MakeMKV does not seem to recognize blu ray disks anymore. When I insert a blu ray in the disk drive, MakeMKV goes into search mode and gets stuck there with the image of the disk in the UI circling endlessly. I was using it to rip blu rays from January through May this year without any issues. I 've even updated to the latest software, but still no joy...
Could someone show me how to get a log, so that I can post it here? Better yet, if there is a known solution to this problem kindly share.
I'm using my makeMKV on my 2017 Mac Book Pro, and the OS version is Mojave 10.14.5

Ditto... I'm having the exact same problem. Did the MakeMKV server get shut down?

Re: If you're experiencing rip errors, please read here first!
I'm also having this exact problem, but on Windows 10. I did get an update on the OS recently, but I'm pretty sure it worked after that before stopping completely. Can't even read old discs. It's not the drive, since the free blu ray player works on the discs that MakeMKV is erroring out on, and I was able to find another program that had no issues opening and ripping the content (although not as nicely as MakeMKV and a short short trial version).Palestrina wrote: ↑Sun Apr 14, 2019 12:55 pmI have started to see this error message about ten days ago.
This first started happening after attempting to rip John Wick 3, but then after uninstalling an reinstalling MakeMKV it worked again, and even worked on a different copy of John Wick 3.
My drive is not LibreDrive enabled.
Any thoughts????

Re: If you're experiencing rip errors, please read here first!
After searching through and reading many different threads, it seems that the problem was that MakeMKV was unable to download the hk keys, due to an issue with the DNS server not being able to resolve an ip address for hkdatastore.tk
Oddly enough, I could nslookup hkdatastore.tk via command prompt or through my router's diagnostic tools, and they could resolve an ip, but MakeMKV and Firefox could not.
Once I switched to using OpenDNS, nslookup failed via command prompt / router diagnostic tools, but MakeMKV was once again able to access what it needed online.
So, if you are getting the following error when trying to open any blu ray:
Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:COPY PROTECTION KEY EXCHANGE FAILURE - AUTHENTICATION FAILURE'
Followed by:
Can't read AACS VID from disc - most likely current AACS host certificate is revoked by your drive
The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted
Failed to open disc
Look for the statement in the log:
"automatic sdf downloading is disabled or failed while decrypting" and something similar with "hk keys downloading is disabled or failed"
You probably need to change your DNS server to Google or OpenDNS and then MakeMKV should be able to access what it needs to from the web.
After changing your DNS server, you may also need to flush the DNS cache (on windows command prompt: ipconfig /flushdns)

Re: If you're experiencing rip errors, please read here first!
If this actually fixes the issue, I would be surprised unless there is something additional in the way of a DNS query that's actually failing that we don't know about. MakeMKV wouldn't be doing its own directed DNS queries, they would be offloaded to the OS. And it either works or it doesn't. There's definitely something wonky going on here because makemkvcon on LInux fails a LOT while my GUI version on my Mac will work just fine, and both machines use the exact same networking setup.iliveinabox05 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 25, 2019 10:10 pmAfter searching through and reading many different threads, it seems that the problem was that MakeMKV was unable to download the hk keys, due to an issue with the DNS server not being able to resolve an ip address for hkdatastore.tk

HI All
I am at my wits end. I am not really techy but am the person in our house who rips the dvds/blurays. Bought Hubby Toy Story 4 for Xmas and am getting the Authentication Failure error (same as Palestrina in the chat). Have had no idea what a dns is but have worked through, changed it, deleted cache and followed all the advice and still no joy.
Any ideas what else I can do? Is it worth trying to delete then reinstall Makemkv?
We don't have a blu ray player at all now so feel like I've wasted 15 gbp on a bluray that won't work and feel gutted.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

-IF- this is a DNS issue, then it has to do with how the client software is coded. I have two distinct systems on my home network - one that runs the CLI version and one that runs the GUI version. They both use identical DNS information and one ALWAYS works (the GUI version) while the other USUALLY works (the CLI version).
For anyone that wants to claim this is a DNS issue, please provide proof of that with details. Any time I have EVER had an issue, it has been with the CLI version on the Linux machine. Moving to the GUI version on my Mac fixes the problem every single time.

If your problem is the same as Palestrina it is not DNS it can be 4 things I can think of,Chickyegg23 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 22, 2019 11:21 am"You probably need to change your DNS server to Google or OpenDNS and then MakeMKV should be able to access what it needs to from the web.

1. Bad disk
2. Bad drive
3. Wrong firmware if this is a 4k UHD disk
4. Old version of makemkv that does not support new aacs versions

Re: If you're experiencing rip errors, please read here first!
Sorry for this novel but,
I had many discs failing and logs telling me OS/Scsi error, MEDIUM ERROR, UNCORRECTABLE ERROR, STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR, and what have you.
I was extremely annoyed about this, since I was thinking that those discs are brand new - I had just now unpacked them for heavens sake.
Clean the disc, some posts read. Well ok, I'll try it. Warm water and appropriate detergent. Made no difference. Failure. I started to notice a pattern that dual-layer disc were the most problematic. I started to think that perhaps there actually is something on the disc that makes my drive unable to read layer two. I have no idea how the laser work, but it made sense to me.
This is where I brought forward the bicarbonate and isopropyl alcohol. I moistened the disc, sprinkled it with bicarbonate, smeared it out a tad bit to cover entire surface, and left it to sit for some minutes. At time for washing it off, I took notice that it had changed colour. The bicarbonate had apparently released something from the disc. I finished the cleanse with isopropyl alcohol and cotton based tissue from center to edge. And what do you know - digitization of disc was successful. And also the next one, and next one, and...
These are probably not sustainable means that one should stick to very often. I don't know.
After noticing that some discs on the surface look cloudy or like water puddle with a drop of gasoline in it, some call it "haze" I think, it has not failed with the above cleaning process and subsequently a successful digitization.
So, fact remains that even if the disc is brand new and wrapped - perhaps this is precisely the basic problem. Let's say that a movie that was produced in 2006, later released on bluray in say 2008, and picked up by me in some kind of supersale in 2019 to be unwrapped and digitized to my media server in 2020. Such a copy could have been sitting in "production residues" or whatever for over 10 years.
Anyhow, I thought I had cleaned the disc. But after really cleaning it, digitizations have been successful and this has yet to fail me. I hope it stays that way, because my pile of brand new wrapped blurays would be hard to replace on account I have no receipts etc.
That was all,
ta ta for now.

Every 2 years or so I get these errors. Getting them now again. A new BD drive solves the problem. I have been buying LG drives, need to find a hardier drive.

Re: If you're experiencing rip errors, please read here first!
So I was having the same issues as everyone else and wanted to offer up my solution in the hopes that it may help someone else some day.
I recently bought season 9 of The Walking Dead on Blu-Ray. I was able to rip 4 of the 5 discs just fine, but the 1st disc was giving my problems. Specifically, it was having problems reading the middle two episodes, episodes 2 & 3, on the disc. Interestingly, I noticed that one of the episodes (I believe it was episode 3) was simply not showing up on MakeMKV's menu after opening the disc, ie. each episode has about 9 chapters so you'd expect to see 4 entries corresponding to the 4 episodes with each entry having 9 chapters... one of these entries was missing. Disc is brand new.
For reference my Blu-Ray drive is a 5.25" ATAPI BD DH8E2S which I bought off of eBay months ago. It's connected to my motherboard via a SATA cable and is inside my PC. I don't know if it's any good, but it's probably ripped about 100 Blu-Ray discs; I've done The Walking Dead Seasons 1 - 9, Breaking Bad Seasons 1 - 5, Better Call Saul Seasons 1- 4, and 10 or so other miscellaneous discs. I've had no other problems with MakeMKV other than one of the season 3 discs having problems for Breaking Bad, IIRC.
Here's my (non-scientific) methodology:
1.) Put disc into my ATAPI drive, noticed errors.
2.) Took out disc and rubbed gently with microfiber cloth.
3.) Put disc into my ATAPI drive, noticed errors again.
4.) Took disc out, treated it with isopropyl alcohol and soft paper towel.
5.) Put disc into my ATAPI drive, noticed errors yet again. This is about the time where I noticed that one of the episodes was completely missing on the disc, ie. not being recognized by MakeMKV.
6.) Took disc out, and this time put it into my Samsung Blu-Ray Player and played bits and pieces of the episode that was having problems being extracted and the episode that was missing completely. For reference, I just jumped around in the episode by chapter and maybe played about 2 minutes in total for each episode.
7.) Put disc into my ATAPI drive, and voila! I was able to extract both the episode that was causing errors and the episode that was missing completely. Problem solved by (I guess) running the disc normally in a standard Blu-Ray player?
Hope this helps someone in the future!
