zootopia 2 bluray wrong language after ripping

Post by Qcom512 »

For some reason, after ripping zootopia 2 all the text is set to another language despite playing normally with the disc in english with vlc. Is this a bug?

If it displays in a different language, it is possible that the wrong one is set as default. If you open the MKV file with, say, handbrake or MKVtoolnix, what does it display as the default language?

(this assumes that you ripped both languages originally)

checked with mkvtoolnix and it shows the video as english. Removing all subtitles and audio streams except the english 7.1 track also gives the same result.

Just today I ripped my (german) Zootopia 2 BluRay.

MakeMKV showed me the main movie in two playlists. in 00800 vor the English texts and (I think it was) 01714 for the German texts.

You have to select the correct playlist to rip.

PS: my Bluray ONLY has German and English... not a single other audio, or subtitle, none. only German and English...

How do I rip the correct playlist? The guide isn't very helpful...thanks for showing what the problem is though!

Do you have Expert Mode enabled in MakeMKV? Changing names with Expert mode enabled

I'm pretty sure you'll need that turned on. Honestly I used MakeMKV for so long with it turned on that I've mostly forgotten what MakeMKV is like with it turned off. :D

In any case, for the north American release of a Disney movie like Zootopia there are probably two or three "copies" of the movie on the disc. In MakeMKV they'll show up as two or three separate titles with large file sizes and the length will be the full movie length. They might all have the same audio and subtitles, but in one all the writing in the movie will be in English. In another one all the writing will be in Spanish. In a third, it is probably French.

If you examine the segment map of each title you'll see some parts that are the same and some parts that are different between each title. The disc is making use of a feature of blu-rays called seamless branching. This is where a movie can be chopped up into multiple parts and seamlessly assembled on the fly into one coherent movie at playback time. This allows for multiple versions of a movie to be stored on a single disc without having to have multiple complete copies of the movie; only 1 copy of each part of each version of the movie needs to be stored. Usually a movie with multiple versions is mostly the same between the various versions of a movie. A playlist for each version is stored on the disc that defines which ordered set of segments belong to each version of the movie. The player plays the segments as defined in the playlist file seamlessly assembling them into the movie you see.

MakeMKV does this as well when .mkv files are made. Depending on which playlist you select, the segments are seamlessly assembled in order into one movie in a .mkv file. If you pick the wrong title/playlist in the MakeMKV interface you might end up with English audio but French visuals.

MakeMKV shows different playlists as different titles. Whichever titles are checkmarked are which 'playlists' you've selected. In your screen shot I can see the title selected is defined by 01716.mpls. The segment map has lots of items in it. If you highlighted the title two up from the one selected, it would probably be a different *.mpls file and the segment map would be partly the same and partly different.

If you check all the big, movie sized titles (I presume there are 3 of them) MakeMKV will produce 3 .mkv files, each assembled from the slightly different segments as defined by their *.mpls files. Undoubtedly one of them will be the version with English writing. All three of them probably have the English audio track.

As a side note, in the 'Properties' box, for the Name field, you could change it from "ZOOTOPIA 2 - BLU-RAY" to "Zootopia 2" or whatever you like. The resulting MKV file's name will start with whatever you set in the Name field and the name field in the .mkv file's metadata will be set to the same thing.
