Holiday Inn

I found an old thread on this, but no resolution for it. I'm new here.
I'm trying with the newest version of makemkv. Here's my errors. I know I have to do more searching for what/why, etc. Here's my errors:

There are multiple possibilities, but the primary ones comes down to the drive either (a) hitting an error that causes it to lock on to reading a bad section of the disk until the operating system says, "It's Dead, Jim!", or (b) the drive was spinning faster than it had power to run, and shut down.

USB drives, as pointed out in the other thread, have a tendency to hit (b) more often when your system will accept data faster, but there just isn't enough power to keep the drive going that fast. Fixes depend on keeping the drive within its limits, either by increasing the USB power available (this is why many drives ship with a two-head cable) or slowing down the write speed, to keep the read speed in check.

The USB problem should NOT happen on an internal drive (but it can), and the point of failure (offset) tends to change around when it shuts down.

If it's always failing at the SAME point, though, it's probably a glitch on the disk itself.

Edited to add: There is also a setting buried in MakeMKV to limit its read speed on a drive-by-drive basis, but I can't remember where it is at.

Thanks Woodstock. I do have an older internal drive. It's the LG WH16NS40.
I've tried cleaning the BD.
The couple things you suggested:
-- If it fails in the same place every time, that's likely a media issue and likely cannot be worked around or fixed.
--Try to slow down the write speed.
--Look for the "setting buried in MakeMKV to limit its read speed". That will make MakeMKV slow down the read speed?

--Are those 2 sort of done in tandem? Slowing down the write and slowing down the read?

The thing to remember is that MakeMKV tries to rip things as quickly as possible. It has some built-in speed limiters, which kick in where layers are changed (you're see an indication of [Safe Mode] next to the read speed when that happens), but there is also a "max speed" that can be set. And if the write buffers are full, that will limit the read speed, too.

The buffer size is set in the Preferences->IO menu, and it's the simplest thing to set lower to keep things from getting "too fast".

Slowing how fast the system can write can also be done in the operating system, but that's usually more problem than it's worth.

Either one will get you messages about "reads faster than can write". The more phun limitation is telling MakeMKV to limit the drive speed, which is more complex and harder to find. That can be set on a per-drive basis, say if you've got one drive that is power-limited, but the other(s) aren't.
