Attack On Titan - All Discs showing debug codes

Post by mcleveland92 »

Hi everyone,

I noticed in previous threads that others were showing issues ripping Attack On Titan from their personal collection.

I believe I am taking the proper steps to avoid these kinds of problems, but I would like to see if this can be resolved. Year after year, others seem to come across these same issues with this amazing show.

Can someone help me figure this out?
I noticed that while watching some of the episodes, minutes of the video are skipped. I'm pretty sure the reason is tied to these debug codes.

While MakeMKV is moving episodes or the full video file to the output folder — whether from an encrypted or unencrypted backup — the following debug codes start repeating. This appears to happen during the copy/mux phase of the process:

Code: Select all

Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I've never noticed debug codes in the MakeMKV log to be a problem. Whenever I run into problems there's something other than just debug codes in the logs.

If you make a decrypted backup of a disc and if it completes without errors, you should have a copy of all the contents of the disc in a folder on your computer's storage. For blu-rays (and 4K UHDs) in the /BDMV/STREAM/ folder will be a bunch of files named #####.m2ts. These are the actual video files on the disc. They should be playable by VLC or most players.
In MakeMKV, if you highlight a title on the left, on the right one of the items will be the 'segment map' which will list one or more numbers. Those numbers correspond to the .m2ts files in the /BDMV/STREAM/ folder.

If you find one of the titles that has skipped video and you figure out the segment map for that title, you could play the .m2ts files directly. Do they contain the skipped video?

The MKVToolNix tools can operate on a decrypted backup of a disc made with MakeMKV. To try a different muxing engine, you could point MKVToolNix GUI at a decrypted backup and create .mkv files with MKVToolNix.

Interesting new update -- just for wanting to see a different experience...

I found this coming up on the MacOS MakeMKV version which aligns with experiencing keyframes for audio for all Discs when using MakeMKV. Is there anyway this issue can be looked into from a developer perspective?

Just so I follow-up with everyone, and hopefully helps others trying to work Attack on Titan copying over...due to the last error being with FFMPEG_ERROR I went over to https://ffmpeg.org and read their documentation and decided to create a script that would remux each unencrypted backup. A question that is now being raised for me is... does MakeMKV use an older version of FFMPEG, because this worked flawlessly. I did use ffmpeg 8.0

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash

# Episode 20
ffmpeg -i "$base_in/00020.m2ts" \
-map 0 -map -0:s:1 \
-metadata title="$show - S01E20 - Erwin Smith - The 57th Exterior Scouting Mission" \
-metadata show="$show" \
-metadata season_number=$season \

It is my understanding that the Mac and Windows versions of MakeMKV have a versions of ffmpeg packaged with them. The Linux version of MakeMKV uses the version of ffmpeg on the system. I don't know the version details of ffmpeg in the Mac and Windows versions.

Then I might just try to start ripping my discs off a Linux OS with MakeMKV so that I can have up-to-date ffmpeg working with MakeMKV.

Who knows MakeMKV ffmpeg version currently being used and then the roadmap of updates of it?

Hello,

I don't know if this thread is still active since it seems you figured out how to resolve the issue but I am extremely new to ripping in general and believe I am having similar problems with my Attack on Titan DVDs. I ordered Seasons 1-3 and the OVAs on eBay because they were so expensive sold separately but they came in the sealed Steelbook versions so I don't believe the issue is with my disks. I also cleaned them repeatedly. When I got my first drive, an Archgon MD-8107S-U3-UHD drive, I was able to rip all episodes (1-9) on the first disk for Season 1, but for some reason couldn't rip the collective "chapter", which I'm guessing contains all episodes and bonus features together. I kept getting these types of errors (not in the particular order I showed here):

Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00017.m2ts' at offset '4720490496'
Error 'OS error - STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR' occurred while reading '\Device\CdRom0' at offset '4720490496'
FFMPEG_ERROR: FFDEC000: [truehd @ 0000013381337A70] No restart header present in substream 0.
FFMPEG_ERROR: FFDEC000: [truehd @ 0000013381337A70] channel count mismatch

I consulted both the forums and MakeMKV logs that told me this was either a disk-related or drive-related issue. However, I didn't think it had to do with my disks since they were new and supposedly in original condition, and they also cost about $70 per season from the Crunchyroll website. I was also able to rip the second disk for Season 1 (episodes 9-13 I think) without any issue on my Archgon. So, I ordered an LG WH16NS40 drive with the Vantec NexStar DX2 NST-540S3-BK enclosure (I don't believe that is relevant though). This time, the drive couldn't rip episodes 3 and 4, which my Archgon could rip just fine, and returned the same errors as above. It also was unable to rip the collective "chapter", returning the same errors as above as well. I also flashed both drives with the recommended firmware (HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin for the LG WH16NS40 and either BU40N 1.02-MK or BU40N 1.03-MK for the Archgon, I don't remember which) and the MakeMKV settings/software seemed to work just fine. I'm not sure if I need to say this or not but I am using the MakeMKV Beta with the latest v1.18.2 update.

If you were able to resolve the issue, since I didn't quite understand your implementation of the ffmpeg script, would you be willing to clarify for me?

Thank you for your time

Those errors mean that MakeMKV was unable to correctly read a spot on the disc. The standard advice is to clean the disc and try again (although I did read that you cleaned them more than once). And I read that you tried the disc in a different drive and got a different, equally unhelpful result.

mcleveland92's script is designed to operate on a decrypted backup of the disc and use ffmpeg to output a .mkv file from decrypted backup.

If you want to try making a decrypted backup, on the first screen of MakeMKV, click on the icon of a yellow folder with a green arrow. If you can't get a clean backup, I don't think the script will help.

I see, thank you for your explanation. I used my air duster and cloth to clean both the disc and what I could of the drive itself, but was ultimately unable to rip the same problematic titles. Interestingly, I switched back to my previous Archgon drive and now couldn't rip the 4th episode, which I was able to rip previously on that drive. My LG was also able to rip the 3rd episode, but not the 4th or collective title after the cleaning. They all kept returning these errors for what seemed to be the same .m2ts file:

Error 'OS error - STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR' occurred while reading '\Device\CdRom0' at offset '835842048'
Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00018.m2ts' at offset '835842048'

So I think I'll order a new set of DVDs for Season 1 and try again. I also tried created a backup and what looked to be the same .m2ts/.mpls gave me an error that I didn't save. Besides ordering new Blu-Rays, would you have any ideas or recommendations? Just simply trying again and cleaning the disk itself worked once for one of the three titles on my two drives, but doesn't seem to help at all right now. Is there a certain "best" way to clean the Blu-Ray without damaging it?

Again, thank you for your time and assistance.

There are lots of ways to clean a disc. The most important thing to remember is whatever method you use you don't want to scratch the disc. The data on the disc is written in a giant spiral like a vinyl record. If you're going to touch the disc, the motion should be perpendicular to that data spiral. So, the motion should be the shortest path from the inside to the outside and vice versa. By doing this, if you accidentally cause a scratch, the minimal amount of adjacent data will be damaged since the scratch will be going perpendicular to the path of the data.

Some people use isopropyl alcohol and microfiber cloth to clean a disc.
I use liquid dish soap, plenty of water, and my finger moving in the appropriate direction. I rinse with plenty of water. I dry the disc with the label side down on a towel and a can of air to blast the water off the data side. Make sure the disc is completely dry before you put it in your optical drive.

The basic philosophy is some gentle process to blast off any debris that might be stuck to the disc so it doesn't become trapped under your cloth/finger/whatever and accidentally scratch the disc. Then some process to remove any oils or deposits that might be on the data side of the disc. Some discs have fingerprints, or deposits from the off-gassing of the case, or leftover lubricants from the manufacturing process, or peanut butter from little grubby fingers who wanted to watch Frozen for the 8 millionth time. :) And yes, sometimes brand-new, just out the package discs need to be cleaned.
