Error 'OS error - {Device Timeout}

Post by el_dustino »

New to using MakeMKV, but I have a new drive, details below. I insert a DVD, couple a clips and voila everything works. But when I try a Blu-Ray (using Harry Potter 8-disc) I get some version of the same error. I have cleaned

Appears to start ripping fine, then slows to 0.8x, time remaining starts going up, then errors begin appearing. Just one example is below, but they just keep going until it fails. I have cleaned the drive and increased the read retry count. I have also plugged the USB into different ports on the computer (saw that on some posts). I can't find where the faq/item/7 is to look for more options so I thought I'd post. I can't even tell what is erroring with the read out, what's "{Device Timeout} " what is "hs"? Anyway, I'll keep ripping old DVDs but would like to get the Blu-Ray working as well. Thanks in advance for any help.

Do you get the same error with several different blu-ray discs?

Yes. I have tried 3 discs so far but the errors start occuring about 10 minutes in, they all say something similar. I also selected the "minimum" playlist with just the main chapter and English language in case that was related somehow. But again, I am not even sure what the error means? What is failing?

How is the drive powered? Only via USB?

What that error implies is the computer asked the optical drive to read a spot on the disc and then it waited for the drive to return the data. It never did and eventually the computer timed out waiting for it.

It is connected via USB but powered by an external power source. I have this enclosure: https://a.co/d/3KSbeIR

I wonder if my computer is going to sleep or powering down somehow? I have the power settings so the screen turns off at 10 minutes, then the device sleeps at 1 hour and never hibernates but maybe the screen turning off is affecting it? I'll play around with that and make sure nothing turns off during a rip.

I have two of those OWC enclosures. They're pretty good pieces of kit.
