Life is Sweet UK bluray - huge number main title playlists

#1 Post by morbius » Sun Jun 25, 2023 5:09 pm

just opened the UK bluray release of the Mike Leigh film "Life is Sweet" with 1.17.4 on Win 10, there is a bit of a delay as makemkv trys to work through BD+ processing, then eventually I get a very long list of main title playlists. Similar behaviour with 1.17.3 on macOS. Any suggestions for a workaround?

thanks.

just to add to this, I have Java installed and VLC integration. VLC shows the disc menu instantly and I'm all set to play the main title, yet on the same machine makemkv seems to be terribly confused. Looking at the number of playlist posts on the forum, is fake playlist management something that's not really working with makemkv at present?

Do you have makemkv pointed at java in the settings?

yes, makemkv is picking up my Java installation. Without the path specified in the Protection tab makemkv picks it up, I also set it manually and same result, I do notice that makemkv seems to hang for a while, and then eventually gives me an extremely long list of playlists with nothing that points to the correct one. VLC player on the other hand just works.

Here is an extract from the log, I'll spare posting the whole thing as there are a lot of playlists, and makemkv can't find the main feature.

In the past, the program's author has asked for folks to send in certain details when this happens so MakeMKV might be improved.

thanks for a reminder about that post, I've sent in a link to an upload of the relevant files in case a future version of makemkv can handle this title.

just giving this thread a bump, had hoped that 1.17.5 might do better with playlist obfuscation, but in spite of makemkv picking up my Java installation I'm still getting a massive number of playlists on this title with none indicated as a main feature. I did submit an upload as suggested, happy to do so again if it was incomplete.

Did you ever get this sorted? The title isn't on the disc info website and I can't seem to work it out either. I know this is an old thread, but hopefully not too old... This thread is the only mention of this disc on the entire web :(

UPDATE:

Well, turns out I was wrong! I misunderstood the Java thing (duh!) and although there was no 'main movie' marker it turns out that 'T1' 00964.mpls isthe main movie, T5 00675 is the commentary, and T6 or 00430 is the 'audio only' interview.

This is a steep learning curve for me even though I've been onto DVDs for years. I assume that in order to restore the commentary as a second track to the main movie, and extract the audio, I'll have to do some sort of MKVToolNix shuffling?

UPDATE - For my own benefit, YES, remuxed commentary went well, although the 'audio only' is very unhappy to be imported into audacity as raw, even with the settings reported by mediainfo (PCM, 16 bits, 2 channel 48k etc...). It plays fine as it is with VLC so lets assume Kodi will too, just with a jarring cut to the remaining movie audio after an hour. I'm going to leave it unedited :-)

All this effort for a 1990 made-for-TV film!!!
