DVD Read errors

Kick-Ass (the original, not Kick-Ass 2) cannot be processed.
Running 1.8.6 (x64t) on Linux with the followin packages installed:
Code: Select all
ii libdvdcss2 1.2.13-0 amd64 library designed for accessing DVDs
ii libdvdnav-dev 4.2.0+20130225-1ubuntu0.1 amd64 DVD navigation library (development)
ii libdvdnav4:amd64 4.2.0+20130225-1ubuntu0.1 amd64 DVD navigation library
ii libdvdread-dev 4.2.0+20121016-1ubuntu1.1 amd64 library for reading DVDs (development)
ii libdvdread4 4.2.0+20121016-1ubuntu1.1 amd64 library for reading DVDs
Which reads other DVDs just fine. MakeMKV fails on two separate computers, with two different BD readers.
The DVD is brand new - I took it out of the shrinkwrap myself.
system logs record this on both systems (repeated many times):
Code: Select all
[ 6227.118933] Add. Sense: L-EC uncorrectable error
[ 6227.118936] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] CDB:
[ 6227.118937] Read(10): 28 00 00 37 ae 10 00 00 01 00
[ 6227.118945] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 14596160
I'm sure this will get the "It's a disc error" response but this DVD plays fine in a DVD player and failes with MakeMKV on two separate systems.
Can anyone tell me how to rip this movie?

Well, what does MakeMKV say about the disk? You've posted information about what Linux says, but not the MakeMKV debug information...
Just because a disk "plays" in a DVD or BD player does not mean it doesn't have flaws. DVD/BD players are programmed to skip over flaws, but ripping is trying to make a bit-for-bit copy (after decryption), so errors aren't ignored.

I'm doing another run to capture the debug log again.
This is the log from openeing the disk:
Code: Select all
MakeMKV v1.8.5 linux(x64-release) started
Debug logging enabled, log will be saved as /home/dale/MakeMKV_log.txt
The new version 1.8.7 is available for download at http://www.makemkv.com/download

Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:UNRECOVERED READ ERROR' occurred while reading '/VIDEO_TS/VTS_16_1.VOB' at offset '19632128'
Those indicate that the drive can't read parts of the disk. Usual causes are scratches, dirt, or a poorly-pressed disk. First step is cleaning the disk.

I'd accept that as an answer, but this is a brand new, fresh out of the shrinkwrap disk.
And VLC plays it just fine from the same machine/drives.

playback isn't ripping, the fact you can watch them does not mean they are defect free.

OK, so let's assume the disk is bad.
How does one justify a replacement with a vendor when only one program fails to read it and nothing they have to test it with will fail?

"hi, I got this DVD and it won't read I one of my players, can I get a replacement please?"
