We are in the process in converting our 8mm tapes to DVDs using the Sony RDR-VXD655 DVD recorder. These 8mm tapes are 2 hours long and are recorded to the DVD in SP mode which produces a DVD of 4.01 GB in size. The DVDs are then finalized.

These DVD's produced by the Sony RDR-VXD655 play fine on the Sony RDR-VXD655 and also on a stand alone Sharp Blu-Ray player. Audio and Video are synced properly.

I then use MakeMKV v1.8.3 to rip the entire 2 hour DVD to a local hard drive. There are no errors during this process.

When playing the MKV file produced by MakeMKV the audio starts in sync with the video but as we get further along the audio get more than 2 seconds out of sync with the video. When a scene ends the audio from the scene continues for a couple of seconds.

I have played the MKV file produced by MakeMKV on multiple computers (Windows 7, Windows XP) and all of them have the same problem of out of sync audio. I can jump to a location near the end in the MKV and the audio is always way out of sync. This shows the problem is in the actual MKV file produced by MakeMKV.

Can this problem be fixed?

Firstly, please enable "expert mode" in preferences and then enable "show AV sync issues" on advanced tab. See if converting the DVD to MKV produces and AV messages at all.

Also, please take the longest title you have and make a test dump per instructions at /onlinehelp/testdump.html . This should give a clue on what's going on.

Yes, thanks. From a first look it seems that your recorder skips video frames. As a result video frame rate is invalid (there are gaps between video frames). When MakeMKV puts this stream into MKV file it removes these gaps, the video becomes "shorter" and you should see audio going ahead of video, with the gap increasing towards the end of file. This is first time we've ever seen such a video stream. Not sure what can be done about that at all.

How is it that the actual DVD itself doesn't have a audio sync problem with these missing video frames?
When the DVD is played in various DVD/BluRay players the audio & video are in perfect sync.

The DVD was just a straight copy of a Sony 8mm 2hr tape. The 8mm tape itself has gaps between various recordings and during these gaps the digital time counter on the Sony 8mm player stops incrementing so maybe the input to the DVD recorder during those times are not valid frames and thus the skipped video frames. This by the way is just a guess.

As for a possible solution can an option be added to not "remove the gaps" thus keeping the audio synced?
