Do DVD drives being set to the wrong region still prevent MakeMKV from decrypting the disc?

I have a small pile of LG GH24NSB0 and GH24NSC0 drives, and I thought I would use them to make a ripping machine, since I have a lot of DVDs.

But the "Backup" function fails. It reads for a while, looks like it's working, but then complains about the region and "Backup failed".

Is this a region problem? If so, is there replacement firmware for the GH24NSB0 / GH24NSC0 drives? Or do I have some other problem?

It depends on the drive.

Most BD drives will allow MakeMKV to ignore the region code; I've ripped DVD disks from Europe and Japan just as easily as US disks.

Some DVD-only drives are not as flexible. They will simply refuse to rip an out-of-region disk without being re-enabled for the new region, taking away one of your allowed region changes.

Sometimes they'll adapt if you run them on Windows or Mac, but not often.

I hooked up a WH16NS60 blu-ray drive which has LibreDrive firmware installed, and to my surprise, it did the same thing when ripping a DVD. It complained about region, and then failed.

Surely LibreDrive drives shouldn't do that? MakeMKV even says "DVD all regions: Yes" in the drive info. What gives?

So, I guess the problem is not the region after all, it's just a bad disc.

Other discs give the region message, but still rip OK.

Is there a way to get a more verbose description of why a rip fails? "Rip failed" immediately after a region error really does imply that it's a region problem, but in this case it wasn't.
