I am trying to get a .iso file of Spriggan to play ball. At first I believed it was an encrypted backup - playing a .vob in VLC produces the expected black screen and glitchy audio. Opening the .iso as a file in MakeMKV gives a list of files, and they all rip just fine and those do play in VLC without any problems as far as I can tell. But I want to be able to burn the full DVD image to a DVD+R, so I mount the .iso in a Microsoft Virtual Drive, which MakeMKV does see, and then I pick Full Disc Backup, and it proceeds until about 9/10ths into the disc, then just abruptly stops with a "Backup failed." error and drops me out, doesn't save the backup at all. I turned on debugging, and was able to pull these codes out.

Not sure what any of those codes mean - if it means that the DVD is corrupted beyond saving, and there's nothing I can do to get the disc working, ah well. I did try redumping the .iso through AnyDVD and XReveal as well, and while both of them completed the dump, the resultant .iso's were just as useless as the original. I find it very peculiar that I can get perfectly fine decrypted files when ripping to .mkv though.

It is because - I think - MakeMKV notices, that the image is still encrypted despite not having a CSS code, and then brute forces the needed CSS key to still decrypt the files. Even DVDfab wasn't recognizing that.

I am not sure, if MakeMKV will do the same, if you mount the ISO in your virtual drive and make a backup of the DVD (which is possible with latest versions of MakeMKV). This will create an ISO as well. But you can try.

Other than that, you can try DVD Decrypter with the mounted ISO. It too should try to read the data and will ask you, if it should brute force the CSS keys needed. You can create another ISO with DVD Decrypter as well in ISO->Write mode.

This is the process that is giving me the "Backup failed" error.

Thanks for this idea though. DVD Decrypter is very deprecated so I will have to fish out an old laptop to test this on - installing DVD Decrypter on Windows 10 or above causes all sorts of crashes. But I will report back on my results. MakeMKV should employ whatever forced-decryption it does in file mode to the full disc mode, or at least provide a checkbox to do so. When I normally do the full disc backup that gives me the error, the option to decrypt video files is checked, but greyed out, which I assume only happens if MakeMKV is assuming there is no CSS to decrypt.
