MakeMKV won't rip DVD no matter what

I've been trying to rip a (legit) DVD into MKV but no such luck so far. I always get this message:
I've tried different DVD opening modes without success, ripping from ISO file or individual VOB files doesn't work either. Creating a backup also fails:
I have playback issues with VLC when opening either the ISO or individual VOBs and some DVD contents are missing, but the disc plays fine on both Media Player Classic and TV.
I'd like to create a single MKV file in order to record a portion of it with VLC because the faulty playback makes it quite difficult to do that when directly opening ISO or VOBs.
Anyone who can help me sort things out?
