MakeMKV ripping faster than the drive's specifications

Hello,

I am very confused. I have a bunch of 8x DVD drives, like the HP DS-8A8SH121C-H.

But MakeMKV is ripping super fast, at 16x:

This is a double-layer DVD. How is this possible?

For this drive, the specs are:
DVD Family:
Write : DVD+R 8X maximum, DVD-R 8X maximum, DVD+R DL 6X maximum DVD-R DL 6X maximum, DVD-RAM 5X maximum
ReWrite : DVD+RW 8X maximum, DVD-RW 6X maximum
Read : 8X maximum
Access time : 150ms

CD Family:
Write/Rewrite/Read :24X maximum

MakeMKV drive speed control
I've already read this post before; it doesn't explain how some drives can read faster than their supposedly maximum speed according to their technical specifications.

I can't find any officially published specs on your model but I'm guessing it's 8x burning speed to DVD+/-R and the full 16x speed for reading pressed DVD-ROMs. Or it could be they only officially say 8x so customers don't get disappointed when they find out many discs don't actually read at 16x which can happen due to many factors.
