1.17.2 generates 1 file / can't rip individual episodes

So I was using 1.15.4 the last time and I was able to correctly rip 7 individual episodes from my disc.

Using 1.17.2, no matter what option I use in DVD Structure Protection Removal Method / Minimum title length, it will only generate 1 massive file, from the same disc, which I then split using mkvtoolnix.

Is there no way to get the old behavior on the newest version? Is there a downside to using an old version?

I have a similar issue where the TV Show I am trying to rip "Third Watch" where MakeMKV groups all episodes on the disk as one one title rather than each episode as a separate title like every other TV Show DVD I've used thus far. If you play the DVD you can select what episode to play and with will only play that episode so the DVD is structured to separate each episode but MakeMKV doesn't see that for some reason.

Its probably how the disc was mastered. Happens a lot in my experience with cheaply produced dvd (and even bluray boxsets). The chapter structure is usually there though, so you can use a program like mkvtoolnix to split it up into separate files for each episode along the chapter lines.

*edit* just saw you mentioned mkvtoolnix in op, don't mind me im not fully awake yet lol

If I try to do a manual open it will list all 4 episodes on the disc but the 4th episode it will say it cannot open it due to a navigation error.

Code: Select all

Disc Information
Label : THIRD WATCH SEASON 1 DISC 1
Titles count : 11

Title information
1: 1/1 - 22 chapter(s) 2:57:25 22 cell(s)
2: 1/2 - 1 chapter(s) 0:00:12 1 cell(s)
3: 1/3 - 1 chapter(s) 0:00:12 1 cell(s)
4: 1/4 - 1 chapter(s) 0:00:21 1 cell(s)
5: 1/5 - 1 chapter(s) 0:01:17 1 cell(s)
6: 1/6 - 1 chapter(s) 0:00:29 1 cell(s)
7: 1/7 - 6 chapter(s) 0:44:58 6 cell(s)
8: 1/8 - 6 chapter(s) 0:44:22 6 cell(s)
9: 1/9 - 7 chapter(s) 0:44:05 7 cell(s)
10: 1/10 - 6 chapter(s) 0:44:01 6 cell(s)
11: 2/1 - 1 chapter(s) 0:00:16 1 cell(s)
If I enter "7 8 9 10" it will give me an error on title 10.

Code: Select all

MakeMKV v1.17.4 darwin(x64-release) started
Optical drive "BD-RE HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH16NS60 1.03 KLGL14F2634d" opened in OS access mode.
Using direct disc access mode
Open DVD manually : "7 8 9 10"
Cells 6-6 were removed from title end
Title #7 was added (5 cell(s), 0:44:56)
Cells 6-6 were removed from title end
Title #8 was added (5 cell(s), 0:44:20)
Cells 7-7 were removed from title end
Title #9 was added (6 cell(s), 0:44:02)
Cells 1-1 were removed from title start
Title #10 (0:44:01) was skipped due to navigation error
Operation successfully completed
Is there a way to rip title 10? I tried reading the page about Manual DVD Mode but beyond specifying a title number as I have tried to do above I was completely confused.

I'm having the same problem with a specific DVD. other TV shows ripped just fine but one I'm doing now is just one big file. I dont know what mkvtoolnix is as I'm new to all this. Not sure if using a video program to cut each episode is possible...

Some DVDs and Bluray disks are like that - they put ALL episodes in a single "episode", and use chapters within a menu to isolate them into episodes.

What disk are you having the issue with? You may have to do as I've done, use handbrake to pull individual episodes from the main file to create your episode files. It gets really fun with disks that have as many as 56 episodes in one file!
