MakeMKV 1.17.3 not opening any HD DVD discs

Hi all,
I'm having trouble opening any HD DVD disc after updating the program to version 1.17.3. I've tried two drives, the Xbox 360 player (plugged directly into the computer and through a powered USB hub), and an LG internal drive (HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW GGC-H20L). The program hangs for a bit when I click the open button, followed by a fatal error message before exiting.

The Windows Event Viewer logs the error and is pasted below:

Code: Select all

Faulting application name: makemkvcon64.exe, version: 1.17.3.0, time stamp: 0x63db85f1

This issue happens on both Windows and Linux versions of the program, and wasn't an issue before 1.17.3. Any suggestions?

Happening to me too, using makemkvcon in a Linux terminal to access my HD DVD drive results in a segmentation fault.

Others have reported problems with HD DVDs in 1.17.3. Older versions of MakeMKV still seem to work though.

V1.17.3 broke HD DVD support
Does HDDVD still work?
Fatal error occurred, program will now exit - 1.17.3

I've managed to get a temporary solution working which lets me process HD DVDs with 1.17.3:
I copy the contents of the disc to my hard drive
I then open DumpHD (https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=123111) to make another copy of the disc without the AACS copy protection.
MakeMKV 1.17.3 opens the decrypted backup just fine.

This method working points to 1.17.3 not being able to process the encryption on HD DVD discs, which is strange as Blu-rays from the same time period work fine.
