Highlander DVD (USA) some disks Bad

Post by jimwelchok »

3 disks out of 6 seasons (~40 discs) will not read and make a terrible noise. I tried cleaning. The next disk works fine. The noise begins instantly on insertion. Almost sound as tho the disc is unbalanced. Will try a USB drive next, then a "real" DVD player.

Tried speed limit - no help. Waiting for linux mint version 17.2 to be picked up.

Now I've encountered a lockup - Sandi Patty - Christmas Live.
During 2nd? stage scanning it hits VOUB 40314 and sticks, while the timers are still counting.
I gave up after an hour and it would not stop - had to close the program. 2 different laptops w/internal DVDs - same problem.

On highlander - got 17.2 - no change.

One possibility that I've encountered is that they put a "special" kind of subtitle in the menu that isn't real. It's been a while since I ripped a disk like this, so I'm going to be a bit vague on describing it.

Essentially, Mike added a feature a few years ago to read the "closed captions" and make them subtitles. Not all DVDs have them (easily grabbed ones here do NOT). Some have them. Some SAY they have them.

It's the last group that is a pain. If you had let the disk continue for a LONG time, MakeMKV would have given up on trying to read them. But that typically takes a COUPLE OF HOURS of doing nothing but churning the disk. Eventually it figures out you don't have any to worry about.

If you tell MakeMKV to ignore the CC "subtitles", the disk loads just fine and you can pull what you want from it. And you would eventually get to that point by letting the disk churn for a while.

Unfortunately, I don't have an offending disk to pop in and remember what I did to stop it. I think it was to simply open the main title and deselect the CC track from the title, then it rips. But my memory isn't so good on this, since it's been a year since I ripped an old DVD.

Actually this is during scanning contents phase. No options yet for audio or CC. I will turn on debug logging and see what it does.
BTW, I have been writing computer programs since 1972 and am still working!

Yea! - I reread the Pinned Comment from Mike on DVD scanning methods. I selected Cell Trim and it worked! Now I have Sandi Patti - Christmas! Soon as I get my Christmas Money - I will buy a full license!
