Episode and movie titles

Post by darthmal »

Why is it makemkv can’t write out the file with the appropriate title? This a a no brained since the information is on the disc! Is the a free app that will hunt this down and name the files? Don’t say Plex because it’s broke.

DVD disks are the most likely to NOT have "proper" naming of files. Bluray and above are more likely to have the name of the disk in a readable format.

My Plex seems to work fine.

Regarding the naming of files… if you look at the filenames on the disc, they're named according to the disc specification which doesn't have anything to do with the title of the movie. Blu-rays, for instance, have media files named #####.m2ts where ##### is a 5-digit number. There are playlists, also named with a 5-digit number, #####.mpls. The title of the movie may or may not be on the disc. On the disc menu, when you put it in your player, the title might be part of the menu background, which is a set of #####.m2ts files in a #####.mpls file.

On BD+ discs, if you have Java installed, MakeMKV will attempt to interpret the Java code to figure out what the names of things are (among other things). Even then, the names it finds are not the way you'd like to name it almost assuredly.

Naming things correctly in MakeMKV before you rip or after the fact with mkvpropedit (part of MKVToolNix) doesn't seem like much of a burden.
