Having issues opening DVDs from certain seller

Post by Marco2G »

Hi everyone

I've ripped hundreds of gigabyte worth of movies and tv shows off of DVD and BluRay since moving to linux and thus from paid chinesium decoder software plus Handbrake to MakeMKV.

Now I suddenly hit a roadblock... I have two box sets of a 90s era anime from German tv that seems to have some copy protection scheme that just leaves makemkv stumped... Opening the disks takes forever... (at one time I left it running for an hour. When I aborted, I was able to rip 3 of six episodes) I have tried three disks from two different box sets... always the same:
Using direct disc access mode

Is there something I can do about this? Is that a hardware issue with my drive (which is a pioneer BDR-209DBK on a SATA to USB interface. MakeMKV lists it as ASMedia ASM105x)?

Thank you

I just tried it in Windows and it amounted to the same thing. However, when I launched DVDFab, MakeMKV did not give me these:
Region setting of drive ASMedia:ASM105x does not match the region of currently inserted disc, trying to work around...
And it let me rip the DVD normally even though it whined about DVDFab producing broken VOBs.
