Overall, I'm very happy with MakeMKV 1.6.3...happy enough that I paid for it after one day of playing with it. However, I do experience some playback hiccups on some rips. By hiccup, I mean sort like a small pause in sound and/or video. When it does happen it is very brief and doesn't make the movie unwatchable, but it would be nice if it didn't have this issue.

For example, I tried to rip my "Meet The Robinsons" DVD. Upon watching it, I noticed a hiccup when playing back on my Boxee Box. Since there are issues with Boxee Box, I wasn't sure if it was to blame, the USB hard drive, the file, etc. I watched it on my computer using VLC and noticed the same hiccup, so I assume it was the rip. I tried ripping on my Mac and Linux machines. I had similar issues in either case.

Not all DVDs appear to have this issue, but I've noticed it on more than one, like my rip of "A Bug's Life". Of course, these multiple incidents may or may not be related. Here is the entire log from ripping "Meet The Robinsons" if it provides any useful information:

I noticed this problem on "Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)", like you I tried ripping more than once to see if it happened again, and it did. I just assumed it was a defective/damaged DVD and thus the rip exhibited this behaviour. Turn on the debug log in MakeMKV and attach it to the forum, perhaps Mike will know what causes it?

Try reducing the "minimum title length" to 120 seconds and then re-rip...

Can you try to figure out where it happens? If it's an error in MakeMKV then it's probably one of two locations:
1. A layer break, approximately in the middle of the movie, 1 time.
2. Start or end of an angle block - usually when translated writings appear on the screen.

Can you correlate location of the hiccup with any two of these?

I'm too experiencing some hiccups in different DVD-rips. But I would describe them in another way. It's like both sound and picture are just skipping one or two seconds. And that's not always at the same position. If I rewind and play the same part again, there is no skip.

I only experience this "problem" with MKVs made with MakeMKV.

My system is Windows 7 Home Premium. Quadcore AMD Phenom II X4 925 Processor. 4GB Ram. Player: VLC or MPC Home Cinema.

Ok, I did it and I am still experiencing the same issues. I won't claim that the hiccups are always in the exact same place, but they are definitely around the same place. For example, there are always a couple in the opening scenes/credits. There are other hiccups throughout the movie too, though. I looked at the disc and it is in pristine condition. There are apparently multiple angles, since I see different possible files I can rip for each angle. I'm attaching the log with debug info.

I can confirm from the log that it IS the bug, either in MakeMKV or how the disc is mastered. Let's try to figure out which discs have this problem - please post the disc name, region and preferably the link to any online shop that sells it.

The disc is "Meet the Robinsons" which I assume is Region 1, since I am pretty sure I just bought it at Target in the USA. When I get home, I'll post the UPC to be more precise. I'll also try start keeping track of other discs that have issues. BTW, what is the tell-tale sign in the log to look for so we can determine if this is the issue or not?

If it would help solve the issue, I'm willing to send you my disc.

I've attached a scan of the back of the DVD cover.

Although "mike admin" is the final authority, I believe this indicates that your previous disc was poorly mastered (or physically damaged or soiled)

I'm not sure I follow that. As I mentioned previously, the disc is in pristine condition and it plays properly on my computer and in my DVD players.

I'll try to use another program to rip it and see what happens in that case...I'll report back.

After a closer inspection, it seems that DVD playback (under Linux) does suffer from at least one flaw during the opening credits. I still need to double check on a DVD player. I also ripped a VOB using mplayer and noticed the same issue in the same place as during Linux playback of the DVD. However, it still seems like there more more hiccups on the MakeMKV rip than in the DVD playback or in mplayer...I will do more comparisons.

I'm still interested in knowing how to detect this situation from the log files and am willing to send in my DVD if it would help improve things.

I am a little concerned since I did notice other hiccups in other rips that it will be difficult tracking all of these issues down. I don't have the time to diligently watch every movie after I rip it to check for issues, which is why knowing what to spot in the log file could be useful.

One more follow up to myself, I verified that it does play properly on my DVD player. So, playback only seems problematic on a computer. Not sure where to go from here. It would be nice if this were just a bug that could be fixed.
