I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this thread or if this was mention before so I apologize for the spam.

I have a Jap. Idol DVD that I'm trying to rip but MakeMKV cannot load the DVD.
I'm not sure if the DVD is protected but inside the DVD the VOB file is hidden and can only be opened with DVD player. (VLC doesn't work)

Is there any way for me to rip the DVD?

"Not loading" can mean many things.

Does MakeMKV say "NO DISK" after the disk stops spinning? That's the operating system saying it could not find a usable file system on the disk. That could be an issue with the drive, or the disk could just be formatted differently.

Is the disk one of those "DVD+CD" disks that used to be popular with record labels, which fell out of popularity because they sucked in just about every device that tried to play them?

Hmm. Don't really know how to explain it but

I open makemkv -> load dvd -> makemkv searches dvd? -> nothing happens.
I waited for about 30 minutes to see if something pops up but doesn't say anything. And it does seem the DVD stops spinning inside the drive (I use external bluray/dvd drive)
I've ripped 30+ dvds from japan but seems like there are very few DVDs that can't be loaded on makemkv.

I'm sure it's not DVD+CD since there are no music and just a dvd video inside.

As mentioned before DVD only plays through DVD players and not through common video players (VLC, gomplayer, potplayer, media player, etc)

How do the files on the DVD look like?

e.g. (on Windows)
- open a command line
- go to the DVD drive with (e.g.) E:
- run dir /s /a | clip

That should list every content on the DVD and copy it as a text into your clipboard. You can paste it in notepad or in here.

It is possible that your drive won't allow MakeMKV to bypass the region coding on the disk. Does the log make mention of that?

As in the SS there is no log. Just stuck in that screen.

Does MakeMKV show this after you just started it and inserted the disc into the drive?

I'm not sure currently, but I thought it at first only shows the main screen with the information about the drive and inserted disc on the right side.

I wonder what happens when you do the following:
- start MakeMKV without the disc inside
- Menu File -> Open DVD files manually
- Insert Disc now
- navigate to the DVD drive -> VIDEO_TS and open the VIDEO_TS.ifo file

does the same happen with the unending scan?

Yes, first insert DVD -> open makemkv -> scanning device -> nothing happens

So I downloaded the updated version and tried Ezatoka instructions.
Same thing loading but nothing happening.

You said, VLC can't open the disc either.

Does VLC tell anything when you try to open the disc or does just nothing happen at all there?

Nothing happens with VLC also.

But Dvd player works I have an old one Corel WinDvd Pro

Do you know if the DVD has a copy protection?

Like try to copy the VIDEO_TS folder from the DVD to your Desktop or something. A CSS copy protection won't let you do this. But maybe there is no protection. Then you can copy the folder and try to open the files inside manually again with MakeMKV

I'm not sure if it is copy protection but I've tried copying the VOB to desktop. It will initial a copy but after a few secs it cancels

Hmm damn. I'm afraid slowly I'm out of ideas what to try (except other ripping programs).

I wonder if DVDshrink can open and analyze the disk

=/ darn i guess some dvds won't be ripped~

I'd be curious if DvdFab PassKey could analyze such a disk.
