Brand New User with an error code I can't understand

Post by kevinpvb » Tue Sep 22, 2015 4:35 pm

Hello All:

I've been a user of DVDFAB and Handbrake to copy DVDs to an external hard drive for viewing through a Roku 3.

I've talked to a good friend that has great luck with high quality movies on his hard drive. He tells me that he uses Make MKV.

I've downloaded the MakeMKV Beta version because it was the only option presented by the MKV website.

I'm using a I7 Surface Pro 3 running Windows 10.

I followed (I thought) the directions from the MKV website and got the following error:

---------------------------
MakeMKV BETA popup
---------------------------
The size of output file 'D:/Make MKV/title00.mkv' may reach as much as 6584 megabytes while target filesystem has a file size limit of 4095 megabytes. Do you still want to continue (title will be skipped)?
---------------------------
&Yes &No
---------------------------

I tried using each button choice and ended up with nothing.

I don't understand what the message is telling me. It sounds like I've got a hardware/software mismatch. But, I can't find anything that discusses this situation.

Any guidance and/or assistance is appreciated.

If you're saving to a flash drive, it is probably formatted as FAT32 for compatibility. It needs to be formatted as NTFS or exFAT to be able to hold files larger than 4GB.

MakeMKV issues that warning whenever there isn't enough space to save the file, either because of lack of total space, or a file system limitation on file sizes.

Thank you for the excellent guidance. I recently converted back from an Apple MacBook Pro to a Windows pc. All my hard drives had been formatted for FAT32 to allow me to use them with either operating system. I reformatted one of the drives and set the file suze to the highest number. Then I copied a dvd to the hard drive as a test. Everything worked great.

I have a couple of other questions if you're willing to share a bit more knowledge. First, is there an optimum size to set? Since the MakeMKV warning mentioned a file size of 6584 Mb, I chose the size that would accomodate that. Do you recommend a different strategy? Second, do you have a preference between NTFS and EXFAT? I'm running Windows 10 on my pc.

Again, thank you for you patience and willingness to share you knowledge

If you formatted with NTFS, the maximum file size far exceeds the largest optical media out there, so don't worry about it. Using smaller cluster sizes (8KB is the default) will allow file sizes larger than the largest consumer hard drives.
