Error "Scsi error"

Post by Jasin » Fri Dec 12, 2014 10:13 pm

Hi, relative new user to MakeMKV. I tried a disc today, and this was the error I received. It continued and appears to have created a file. It plays, the quality is not the best, but it works. What does this mean? My drive has the latest firmware. I've tried 3 different discs for this same dvd, but the same error. DVDFab won't copy any of them either. Never had this problem with any other disc before.

Thanks for any help.

"Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:READ OF SCRAMBLED SECTOR WITHOUT AUTHENTICATION' occurred while reading 'BD-ROM ATAPI BD E DH12E3SH MAA3' at offset '1048576'
Drive BD-ROM ATAPI BD E DH12E3SH MAA3 has RPC protection that can not be bypassed. Change drive region or update drive firmware from http://tdb.rpc1.org. Errors likely to follow.
Using direct disc access mode"

When dealing with region coding, MakeMKV can bypass it through brute-force attacks on most drives. Sometimes, there are drives that do not relent.

The suggestion to check rpc1.org to see if they have replacement firmware for your drive is one option. If firmware exists for your drive, it will turn it into a "region-free" drive.

I have had MakeMKV make that suggestion for a couple of my drives, then proceed to rip disks just fine in spite of the warning. One of my DVD drives has never had a region selected for it, and it has ripped both region 1 and 2 disks without issue.

Thank you for the easy to understand reply to my question. I checked and there is no update to my driver's firmware on rpc1.org. The disc I tried to convert today was from my region, and my dvd drive is set for region 1. So I assume the error was just general and as long as I convert discs I buy in my region, they should convert without problem?

Thanks.

Yes, you should get no warning on Region 1 disks.

But, again, even if you get the warning, MakeMKV usually can rip disks from other regions. If it can't, I think there will be a failure to decode the CSS sectors, but Mike can address that when he checks in next.
