makedvd not converting whole DVD
makedvd not converting whole DVD
Hi
I am using makedvd on all of my dvd's to put them on my NAS. I use the video_ts.ifo from the video folder (which is on the NAS, too) as a source.
Most are working, but on some dvds it rips most of the dvd, but not the end (not so nice to see the whole movie, but not the end).
Its not the nas or network, because when I re-convert the disc, I get teh same results...
I cannot see any error in the log, but here it is:

Re: makedvd not converting whole DVD
Mr. google is having a hard time with this, if you can temporarly choose English under settings and then post the output I'm sure more help would come out.
Re: makedvd not converting whole DVD
Also, try installing version 1.8.7, as suggested by your log, to see if the items fixed in the new version affect your problem.

Re: makedvd not converting whole DVD
I think there may be something to this. I've ripped my Buffy and Angel DVDs and have been adding chapter names and have begun encoding, I noticed on some of the encodes the logos at the end were missing but when I checked the original MakeMKV rips they were missing there too, so I assumed that was how it was on the disc. However, I just finished adding chapter names to season 4 of Angel but found there was one less chapter in episode 21 then there was on the packaging, so I checked and the end credits are completely missing. I re-ripped the episode just to see and this new version is full length with nothing missing. Something is wrong here.

Re: makedvd not converting whole DVD
Episode 03x06 of Buffy lost 12 seconds somewhere along the line. It doesn't seem to be reproducible so it's possibly a hardware error and Mike would know better than me how MakeMKV handles those.
Re: makedvd not converting whole DVD
OK, so I can reproduce it, although I'm not sure what to do from here.
if should look like this:
Title #1 was added (15 cell(s), 0:41:14)
Title #2 was added (15 cell(s), 0:41:42)
Title #3 was added (15 cell(s), 0:42:28)
and does most of the time but in this case it's like this:
Title #1 was added (15 cell(s), 0:41:14)
Title #2 was added (14 cell(s), 0:39:38)
Title #3 was added (15 cell(s), 0:42:28)
I won't rule out the possibility that one of my math cores is damaged and the discrepancies might stem from which core is being used at the time, but I can't know just yet and buying a whole new computer is a bit extreme at this point. I'll just leave MakeMKV open for the moment while I go shopping and hope someone posts something to tell me where I should go from here.

Re: makedvd not converting whole DVD
OK then, so I know how to reproduce the problem at will now. If I insert the disc in the drive BEFORE I start MakeMKV I get the shorter time, yet oddly, if I don't rip it, close MakeMKV then open it again I get the proper time. I don't know if this is a bug in MakeMKV but it's definitely a problem. If detecting the proper duration isn't an option could MakeMKV at least realise something is wrong and throw up a warning or something. People are going to do whatever's convenient, and remembering to start MakeMKV before inserting discs or else something barely noticeable will happen isn't very likely, especially for someone who's new to MakeMKV...
Am I the only one who's worried about this???

Re: makedvd not converting whole DVD
Wow, that's a nice bug. Please collect two testdumps for the same title, one time with 14 cells and one time with 15 cells. The procedure is described at /onlinehelp/testdump.html . Bugs like that are hard to find, so I count on your help. Thank you.ndjamena wrote:OK then, so I know how to reproduce the problem at will now. Re: makedvd not converting whole DVD
So now of course it can't get it to happen I'll keep trying, I did start up DVDFab this session in relation to a thread on this forum and it did update to a newer version, so maybe it changed something or has left something running in the background. When my current avisynth scripts are finished processing I'll restart my PC and try again.
Re: makedvd not converting whole DVD
Um, I got it to repeat but I did something different this time. I inserted the disc and loaded up MakeMKV but the correct times showed up, so I closed MakeMKV and immediately opened it again and pressed the big button before the drive had even wound down. Now I'm not sure what's going on.
I've made the first test dump.

Re: makedvd not converting whole DVD
Oh:
Not a bug then.
I got the bad timings 3 times in a row by inserting the disc first, and good timings in between those attempts, I'm not sure how many more times I should have tried after that.
Still, more of a warning would be nice, I have no way of knowing when these things happen and the outcome isn't always obvious. Does anyone check the debug log after every rip?
I'm not sure I should still email the dump links...
My retry count is at 64 with a 1024 buffer, I'm not sure what the default is...

Re: makedvd not converting whole DVD
OK, I see how it works now, if I try to read the disc while it's revved up it won't read it properly, somehow I was opening MakeMKV while windows was checking the contents of the disc and it got caught up in the rush.
The full debug log:
Is there any way to get those errors to show in the Main Window? I've had at least two discs do this, and I've only actually checked the rips from the first 3 seasons of Buffy. I can't be the only one with this problem. (It may be the OP had exactly the same thing happen, considering how short some of these cuts are most people with the same issue may never realise it occurred)
I've realised since ST:TNG season 2 that I'm supposed to send dumps via email but I'm not sure if these ones are relevant anymore so I'll post them here:

Re: makedvd not converting whole DVD
OK, so I've been trying to get the same thing happening on my secondary DVD drive but had a hell of a time trying to get the thing revved up. Eventually I noticed a "Create Image From CD/DVD" option some program had added to the discs context menu. A Program called ISO recorder popped up and I began the process. When the DVD drive revved up I cancelled then quickly started up MakeMKV and I got the bad timings as a result.
That's at least two drives (Pioneer Blu Ray Drive, LG DVD Drive) and at least 2 different discs.
I spent the last day running my PC through torture tests just to make sure there's nothing wrong with it.
Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool
12 hours of Prime95
Hot CPU Tester Pro
It passed without a glitch.
Just to be sure I'll try switching SATA ports and test it on a different IO controller, I can't think of anything else to try after that.

Wow, first try!
I think this warrants an email.

Re: makedvd not converting whole DVD
Ok, I think I know what's going on. That's how the DVD copy protection works - the drive is unreadable unless it is authenticated. When MakeMKV opens a disc, it authenticates the drive so the disc becomes readable. Same with DVDFab and any other program that reads DVD. Each time any program authenticates the drive, it does so by de-authenticating the drive first. So, during the drive authentication no program can read data from the disc.
So, the golden rule of DVD is that you should never run more than one application on a single DVD at the same time. If you violate this rule, you will get random read errors. In this particular case MakeMKV failed to read the data at the end of title and assumed that this area of the disc is unreadable due to a copy protection.
MakeMKV can't detect whether read error is because of the drive, disc, or because some other application dropped the drive authentication.
