Multiple instances
Multiple instances
Hi,
I have two drives I want to be able to use simultaneously to back up series box sets.
Opening two instances of MakeMKV mostly works, until it doesn't.
The biggest problem is more of an annoyance. When one disc finishes and you eject it, the drive selection automatically flips to the other (busy) drive. If you correct it at this point, it flips back again. You can only do it and have it stay after inserting another disc.
This also seems to occasionally cause one of the running instances to get confused about which disc it's reading and error out partway.
Likely the easiest fix is to have an option to disable drive auto selection.

Re: Multiple instances
Turn on 'Ask for single drive mode' on the IO tab in MakeMKV's preferences.

Re: Multiple instances
AH, thanks. I saw that but didn't think it was appropriate because I don't have a single drive.
Re: Multiple instances
... And it still does it.
Re: Multiple instances
After turning on that setting, when you start MakeMKV it should ask you which drive you want to lock that instance of MakeMKV to. Pick one of your drives, don't pick 'All drives'.
To use a second drive, make a new instance of MakeMKV. Lock that instance to a different drive by picking a different drive from the drop down when that instance starts.

Re: Multiple instances
Did all that. The Windows version doesn't seem to have a "New instance" in the menu.
The second instance seems to work properly. The first instance (which asked which drive), flips to the second drive after ejecting the disc it just finished in the first drive.

Additional info:
I closed and restarted the first instance (while the second was running). Again it asked which drive and I chose the first drive. Loaded a disc and it detected it. Clicked the Open DVD disc button. Got the following log:
Clicked the Open DVD button again, and it worked:

Re: Multiple instances
I know this won't help, but the last time I had a computer that could multi-task multiple drives simultaneously was an Amiga 500. Separate processors for just about everything in it. The CPU just sent the commands and the dedicated processors would take over. But that was a long time ago, barely remember that stuff.
Re: Multiple instances
I occasionally use two and sometimes three drives at a time and they all operate independently. I've seen Billycar11 post pictures of a dozen drives in use at a time on his Windows machine while testing drives being preparing for sale. I've seen people on the forum get frustrated that the limit seems to be 16 drives at a time.
In my case, all my drives are LibreDrive enabled drives. I have no idea if that matters.
I spent a lot of hours in front of an Amiga 500 and eventually an Amiga 2000 with a Video Toaster when I was growing up.

Re: Multiple instances
I loved the Amiga. I think the Babylon 5 special effects were done on the Amiga 2000.
