Spider-Man (2002) Backup Fails

Post by dolphin » Sat Jul 19, 2025 9:29 pm

Backing up Spider-Man (2002) always fails despite trying different computers (all Macs), drives, and discs. If I log debug messages, I get one, solitary error.

With MakeMKV v1.18.1 [darwin(arm64-release)]:

Code: Select all

Backing up disc into folder "/[...]/DVD/backup/Spider-Man (2002).iso"
DEBUG: Code 0 at 9eS$innFdFOuvjlCt~9d:121266097
Backup failed
This appears to be a hash of a file and line number in the code.

The exact same error is produced when trying to back up the bonus disc. Is there something different I can try? Or could there be a bug in MakeMKV?

What happens if you try an older version of MakeMKV? https://makemkv.com/download/old/

According to the revision history, the DVD engine was rewritten in 1.17.0. Perhaps give version 1.16.7 a try.

Version 1.18.0 fixed a crash that was introduced by changes in MacOS 15.4. So if your Mac is up-to-date on the OS, the older versions might not work. Hopefully you have a Mac with an older version of MacOS on it.

I wondered the same thing, but maybe didn't try the right combination.

I tried v1.18.1 on a new mini M4 Pro, v1.18.1 on a 2011 iMac running High Sierra (10.13.6) and v1.10.5 on a 2008 MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard (10.6.8). The latter just complained the program was "too old" (and unregistered). I think I travelled too far back in time!

I'll give 1.16.7 a shot on the iMac. Appreciate the advice!

v1.16.7 doesn't work, either.

I installed v1.16.7, set my system clock back to June 2022, and launched MakeMKV. The option to "backup" was grayed out in both the toolbar and menu. I tried the CLI and got the following:

Code: Select all

MSG:5072,131072,1,"Backing up disc into folder \"file:[...]/Spider-Man.iso\"","Backing up disc into folder \"%1\"","file:[...]/Spider-Man.iso"
MSG:1003,16777248,3,"DEBUG: Code 0 at ]e:KbvkWM0NJ2xUsJvr:213141139","DEBUG: Code %1 at %2:%3","0","]e:KbvkWM0NJ2xUsJvr","213141139"
MSG:1003,16777248,3,"DEBUG: Code 0 at JMLyq5mCfgiW96\\E>f~@:213133457","DEBUG: Code %1 at %2:%3","0","JMLyq5mCfgiW96\\E>f~@","213133457"
MSG:1003,32,3,"DEBUG: Code 233 at PGeQoNrevjfHpAeWV5XwbOa5:0","DEBUG: Code %1 at %2:%3","233","PGeQoNrevjfHpAeWV5XwbOa5","0"
MSG:5069,128,0,"Backup failed","Backup failed"
MSG:5080,516,0,"Backup failed.","Backup failed."
I could extract separate titles, but I've been able to do that with all the combinations I've tried. I simply cannot back up the disc. In the case of 1.16.7, it took ~15 minutes to scan the main feature. But at least it gave me a warning:
Complex multiplex encountered - 40 cells and 14511 VOBUs have to be scanned. This may take some time, please be patient - it can't be avoided.
[This was off by a tad. It was more like 2.8 million VOBUs, but that may be the "complex multiplex" effect. v1.18.1 is much faster.]

I've tried other things, like creating a DVD master ISO from the disc and trying to back that up. Same problem.

There appears to be a discrepancy (bug) between how title-sets are scanned when extracting individual titles and how they are scanned when backing up a disc.

Gory details on the v1.18.1 CLI attempt follows...

Code: Select all

makemkvcon backup --decrypt --cache=128 --noscan -r --progress=-same disc:1 [path]/sm.iso
It behaved (expectedly) just like the GUI. Specifically, it starts scanning the contents, gets through the MENU (apparently) and then croaks before finishing the scan (possibly when starting to scan the first title). Here's the terminal output (with personal file paths redacted):

Code: Select all

% makemkvcon backup --decrypt --cache=128 --noscan -r --progress=-same disc:1 [path]/sm.iso

There are 29 title sets (based on the successful scan when I extract just the main feature), but it can't make it past the menu.

In case someone asks, "What about the debug log?" Well, here it is:
