I have also checked that the DVD can be played using VLC and ripped using tccat and dvd95.

This is an incorrectly mastered disc. How soon the error happens - at the very beginning of the conversion, in the middle or at the very end?

While the log has been made trying to rip only the first track the error occurs somewhere in the middle of any of the four tracks. I will double check it this evening. While not impossible, having a production defect on several tracks seam unlikely.

Also if this is a production issue then why are the other tools capable of ripping the DVD?

My alternative flow (when makemkv fails) uses dvd95 (to make something that avidemux can work with), avidemux (to extract the subtitles) and tccat (to generate one vob per track). The resulting
files are muxed together using mkvtoolnix. The fact that mkvmerge is able to mux the video track without errors or warnings is a quite reliable indication of the fact that the rip was done properly by tccat because the MPEG2 video input methods of mkvmerge are quite picky. At least there is no damaged Group Of Pictures.

I tried ripping the DVD again. This time it worked without any problems.
This lack of reliability on the part of the DVD is quite irritating. Is this a common problem? Anyhow, my conclusions are:
- I am comforted in my strategy to make backup of DVD after purchase. If they are read errors now, I do not
dare imagine the state of the DVD in a few years.
- As enabling debug mode is not for everyone, it would be nice if MakeMKV displayed a more helpful error message.

@xaviour

Hi!
I tried ripping the DVD again. This time it worked without any problems.
That's certainly good news, however:

1) Had you possibly allowed your system to cool down for a while, before this successful rip?

2) You might want to clean your BD/DVD drive. Maxell makes a cleaning disc that sells for about $10U.S.

3) You might also want to clean your primary system to get rid of dust bunnies, etc.
