Error Messages

Post by Noteworthy » Sun Apr 12, 2020 5:55 pm

Hi,

I'm trying to rip a DVD (brand new). Having reived the error messages below I have run MKV as administrator but the MKV icon remains greyed out. OS: Win 10.

Hope you can help.
Many thanks

Your drive is saying there are parts of the disk it cannot read, therefore it can't open the disk. The most likely place that is unreadable is the start of the directory, near the hub; MakeMKV can't read the parts that determine what keys to use to talk to the drive. The drive then reported seek errors when trying to advance beyond that.

You can try cleaning the disk. The last time I had one pop errors like this, though, I found a crack in the hub, and had to replace the disk.

Many thanks for your response.
The DVD is pristine in its cleanliness as it is new out of the box. Nevertheless, I have have air-cleaned it with the soft brush of the hand pump that I use for film negatives.
You have helpfully suggested that there might be a hub crack, I have minutely examined the disk with a high-powered magnifying glass and have found no visible traces of damage.
By the way, the disk plays absolutely fine otherwise on my 1] mac (using its built-in drive), 2] pc (using an external blu ray drive) and 3] dvd player.
Perhaps MKV cannot get beyond its copy protection? The disc is dual layer single side and bears a notice saying that viewing copies cannot be made.

What happens if you use THIS drive with MakeMKV?
If the problem persists, please provide a complete Debug log (see my signature how this can be enabled). Maybe that there are some other errors before the already psoted error occures.
Good Luck :)

Many thanks.

I have used the Blu Ray drive with MKV see below: 'BD-ROM MATSHITA BD-CMB UJ-120 1.01'
The same drive works fine for other DVDs.
I will repeat the process and send you the log.
Best regards

The only thing which is a little bit strange is this message "WinCdArb=v1.0.0_tiny win(x64-release)". Never seen this before. But it is related to MakeMKV: http://www.makemkv.com/wincdarb/

MakeMKV tries to identfy the disc content, but fails. Only Mike knows the meaning of the debug codes ....

Does other disc's work? Only this one failed?
Good Luck :)

Many thanks Grauhaar.
I do hope Mike looks at this issue.

Yes, other discs are fine. This one appears to be heavily protected and issued in the UK.

I don't think it's the protection (the identify failed), something is different or wrong with the UDF (Universal Disk Format).
Your messages indicates this:
udf: UDF mount: error reading volume space
udf: UDF mount: error reading volume space
Good Luck :)

Thanks Grauhaar, but I'm not any the wiser.
Do you think it is a Windows issue?

Found the above based on UDF search.
Woodstock says:
Windows included an update that installs a "anti-ransomware" option, default ON, that blocks programs that aren't properly authorized from accessing certain resources. Like optical drives.

You have to add an exception for MakeMKV before it will allow it to see the optical drives, even if you're running as admin.

I don't have the details handy, but Google has a lot on it.
Do you think this could be it?

No, that's to fix if Makmkv is blocked to see/access the drive.
Good Luck :)

Epilogue

I resurrected my old laptop running win 8.1
No problems at all. The disk was ripped as expected with no problems!

Apparently, after a recent Win10 update there are problems with some external drives. I will have to sort that one out.

Thanks to all for your help.

Due to the addional involved USB software and hardware, strange things can happen during the communication with the drive to simlulate the complete disc access logic over the USB protokoll. f.e many external drives have trouble to flash new software (LibreDrive) due to the USB components.

But good to know that you could "fix" the problem :)
Good Luck :)
