Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown DVD - Weird behavior

Post by danielrg » Thu Jul 18, 2019 8:44 am

This DVD rips okay, but the behavior is very odd.

For the main titles, the ripping starts, but appears to "hang" for about the first 10-12 minutes.

Weird things:

The read speed is lower than usual (about 3 MB/s, my usual is 8-10 MB/s) for the first 10-12 minutes
Output file status sits at 3.9KB - and file shows 0 in Explorer, doesn't change.
Status bar stays at zero
Disc drive light blinking like it is reading data

After about 10-12 minutes, the file would fill up almost instantly to about 300 MB, and then the rest of the rip would continue "normally", with the output file size updating, the speed would increase to more normal levels, and the progress bar would move regularly.

For a 2 GB title, it did this weird "hanging status, no file content" thing for ~12 minutes, getting a 300 MB file, then finished the rip with normal status, getting the remaining 1.7 GB in about 10 more minutes (22 min total)

It's kind of academic, since the files I ripped are good, but thought I'd share.

Here's the debug log:

That's the behavior of a drive trying REALLY HARD to read a marginal section of the disk.

Hmm, I just bought it. After your comment I saw that there are strange swirls on the disc, they look too perfect to be anything but something that happened mechanically, perhaps at the manufacturer. Well, I'm glad I successfully ripped it! Might get a replacement disc but if not, I have the content anyway.

Glad the drive tried so hard :-) The files play well.

Thanks!

Swirls put me in the mind of "rental disk, refinished to remove scratches". Used to see that a lot with Netflix rentals. Even had some disks I returned as unplayable come right back to me after polishing (they had other identifying marks that were unique).
