StudioCanal Early Hitchcock Set
StudioCanal Early Hitchcock Set
These all successfully created MKV files, but when I skip around it gets really blocky and horrible for a second or two, as shown in the attached screenshot.
It's irritating but workable on my PC. On the other hand, when I play them on my TV through emby, they're like that for the entire duration of the film. It's completely unwatchable.
I've also attached a log of one of my attempts with one of the discs. The problem happens 100% of the time on 100% of the discs in this set. Other discs have been just fine.

Re: StudioCanal Early Hitchcock Set
Most likely reason is that MPEG video streams do not have "every frame" in them; They have "Key" frames at intervals, and frames between key frame are the difference between the current frame and the previous frame. These differences accumulate, and jumping to a non-key frame won't display the whole image. This is why it clears up after a moment on the computer; the next key frame is read, and things get back on track.
As to why the TV would have an issue when served through Emby, I cannot say. I have no experience with Emby. What happens if you play from a USB attached to the TV?

Re: StudioCanal Early Hitchcock Set
Emby MAY be transcoding, in which case it will require time to 'catch up' (re-buffer) when skipping around?
When you say 'on my TV through emby', do you mean:
- via an Emby TV client app?
- TV player via Emby DLNA?
- EMC (Emby WMC client)?

Re: StudioCanal Early Hitchcock Set
@Woodstock: All my other DVD rips can be skipped around just fine. They also play back perfectly through emby. I'm guessing there's a connection between those two things.
@d00zah: I'm starting from the beginning and playing the entire first minute or so, I'm not skipping around. All my other DVD rips are fine. The only difference is that these are region two and the others are region four.
I'm playing it through my LG OLED55C6, through the emby app.

Region should not matter - MakeMKV will remove region coding.

Re: StudioCanal Early Hitchcock Set
I THINK the issue comes down to region 1 (60Hz) vs region 2 (50Hz)? TV may not be coping well with the PAL refresh rate.
Re: StudioCanal Early Hitchcock Set
@Woodstock: It shouldn't, but it's the only difference I can think of between these DVDs, which are having GOP issues on PC and playback issues on my TV, and all my other DVDs, which are fine.
@d00zah: I'm in Australia, 99% of my DVDs are PAL. Everything else works fine.

Re: StudioCanal Early Hitchcock Set
Sorry. Gotta work on reading comp. Always the 1st thing to go... today.
edit: Do Emby media info reports for each region indicate any glaring differences?
Re: StudioCanal Early Hitchcock Set
I tried putting it on a USB and plugging it straight into the TV. Same problem, so it's definitely not emby that's causing it. I've attached a photo of what it looks like on the TV, this is after a minute and a half of continuous playback. It's looked like this the whole time (albeit with the blocks moving around, obviously).

Re: StudioCanal Early Hitchcock Set
Really didn't think it was Emby. Rather suspected the TV player.
My early experiments with Emby/SMART TVs indicated a problem w/ VOBSUBs, but in your case, the 'good' files have the embedded subs... so that's not it.
Unsure what the differences imply, but obviously the TV has an issue with 'em. Based on the linked info, I believe Woodstock explained the issue in his 1st reply. The TV just can't seem to recover.

Re: StudioCanal Early Hitchcock Set
So basically I can't ever watch these on my TV?
Not sure what picture structure is, or what M and N mean. I've only heard of I, B and P.

Re: StudioCanal Early Hitchcock Set
Without a deeper understanding of what offends the TV, I don't know. Possibly not in their original format? Handbrake (or VidCoder) could convert them to something the TV plays? Experiment... try one.
Re: StudioCanal Early Hitchcock Set
GOP (Group of Pictures) means the Group starts with an I-Frame (one complete picture) and a number of delta pictures which are only includes the difference to the previous picture, after this the next GOP starts and so on. In your case, the one DVD uses 15 Pictures (1x I-Frame and 14x Delta) the other uses 26 Pictures (1 I-Frame and 25 Delta). Maybe the GOP size is to huge for the TV. An TV signal has some limits for the GOP size and DVD content can use larger GOP sizes.
You can try to reenocde the DVD with Handbrake and maybe you can specify a max GOP size. Never used it with this specific options. Or buy an External Media Player connected to the TV via HDMI which plays anything.

Good Luck

Re: StudioCanal Early Hitchcock Set
I'm aware of that, but that doesn't explain what M and N are.
As far as re-encoding, that means a) quality loss and b) chapter-point loss.

Re: StudioCanal Early Hitchcock Set
Might want to contact LG support & see what they have to say? It's their player & it's neither a MakeMKV, not Emby problem.
Admittedly, my eyes are poor, but I reprocess every DVD I rip with VidCoder (for general compatibility) & see little loss. Plus, Emby allows multiple versions to 'live in harmony'.
& I retain my chapter-points. Check your config.
