Ken Burns: The Vietnam War

Post by brianshowers » Tue Nov 21, 2017 2:12 am

I'm having problems with a few discs from Ken Burns: The Vietnam War. Most of them are fine, but for discs 3 and 8, MakeMKV doesn't find the main title. It just finds a couple of ancillary ones.

For example, on Disc 8, I get the following output:

Code: Select all

Using direct disc access mode
Title #3 has length of 86 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 600 seconds and was therefore skipped
Title #4 has length of 5 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 600 seconds and was therefore skipped
Title #5 was added (1 cell(s), 0:25:30)
Title #6 was added (1 cell(s), 0:22:40)
Title #11 has length of 86 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 600 seconds and was therefore skipped
Title #14 has length of 86 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 600 seconds and was therefore skipped
Title #17 has length of 86 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 600 seconds and was therefore skipped
Title #20 has length of 86 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 600 seconds and was therefore skipped
CellWalk algorithm failed (structure protection is too tough?), trying CellTrim algorithm
Cells 1-1 were removed from title start
Cells 16-16 were removed from title end
Title #23 has length of 86 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 600 seconds and was therefore skipped
Title #26 has length of 86 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 600 seconds and was therefore skipped
CellWalk algorithm failed (structure protection is too tough?), trying CellTrim algorithm
Cells 1-1 were removed from title start
Cells 16-16 were removed from title end
Title #29 has length of 86 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 600 seconds and was therefore skipped
CellWalk algorithm failed (structure protection is too tough?), trying CellTrim algorithm
Cells 1-1 were removed from title start
Cells 16-16 were removed from title end
Title #32 has length of 86 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 600 seconds and was therefore skipped
CellWalk algorithm failed (structure protection is too tough?), trying CellTrim algorithm
Cells 1-1 were removed from title start
Cells 16-16 were removed from title end
Title #35 has length of 86 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 600 seconds and was therefore skipped
Title #38 has length of 86 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 600 seconds and was therefore skipped
Title #41 has length of 86 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 600 seconds and was therefore skipped
Title #44 has length of 86 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 600 seconds and was therefore skipped
Title #47 has length of 86 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 600 seconds and was therefore skipped
CellWalk algorithm failed (structure protection is too tough?), trying CellTrim algorithm
Cells 1-1 were removed from title start
Cells 16-16 were removed from title end
Title #50 has length of 86 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 600 seconds and was therefore skipped
Operation successfully completed
Title #5 that it found was only 41.8M and Title #6 was only 37.1MB track. Neither of those have any audio and neither are the true main title.

I finally got Disk 4 to work, but never did get Disk 3 to come up with anything but what you have posted. Will be trying Disk 5 with the new MakeMKV version when it gets here.

I suggest both of you submit the information asked for in the FAQ link in my signature to support@makemkv.com, so that Mike can look at it.

Hi, was there an answer for this ? I have the same problem with DVD 3.

-------------------------------
Edited to add - I made a full disk copy using DVDFab which complained about multiple errors on the physical disk, which I told it to ignore.
I built a straight .iso on a hard drive which I fed into MakeMKV (1.10.8 ) via the files menu. MakeMKV then ONLY saw the main title (00) where
previously reading the physical disk it had seen a couple of smaller titles. I then built a .mkv file from that and used that as the backup copy
I was trying to build.

I think the smaller titles that MakeMKV first saw are deliberately constructed to generate errors and mask the main title.

Just another verification: Discs 3 & 8, exactly as described above. I could add supporting documentation, but it sounds like others have covered it.

This is my first experience with makemkv stumbling. How does this sort of thing usually go?

FYI I sent a makemkv log and zipped IFO files to support@makemkv.com for disc 3 last Tuesday. Will do the same for disc 8 asap.

I was able to rip disc 3. I opened the disc in manual mode and selected title 33 (just enter 33 in the manual mode box that pops up).

I found out the correct title by opening the disc in VLC and playing the main title. While the title is playing, click on Playback | Title to see which title is playing.

EDIT: I just got to disc 8 and the proper title is also 33.

Hope this helps!

Sorry for the dumb question, but what does "open the disc in manual mode" mean? Is this a feature of MakeMKV that I don't know about?

However, as bmillham pointed out there is a workaround by opening the DVD in manual mode and choosing title 33.

But for novices like me: Enable Expert mode in makemkv (View --> Preferences --> General --> Expert Mode. Restart makemkv). Now in the main DVD screen you'll see the checkbox for "Open DVD manually". Check that.

When the box with titles comes up, don't try to click on number 33. Instead enter 33 in the text entry spot at the bottom of that list.

This is a good trick (use VLC to determine what title plays, then manual mode on makemkv to choose it). I don't expect this problem comes up often, but when it does this will be my first recourse.
