mkv from 1.9.2 not filling the screen

I used MakeMKV for an old "flipper" DVD, and the log is below. One side of the DVD is "16x9 FF" and the other is "4x3 FF" -- these are the tokens that are appended to the respective parent directories of the VIDEO_TS folders. I processed the 16x9 side. When I watch the 16x9 side of the disc on a TV or in vlc, it fills the screen. I created an mkv with MakeMKV, and when viewed in vlc, the image has black bars on the sides -- everyone and everything seems thinner.

About 6-7 years ago I processed this disc with DVD Decrypter and DVDFab, and the DVDFab avi I created also filled the screen.

What can I change to make this mkv correct? (Or, what did I set that caused this mkv to display incorrectly?) Many thanks as usual folks.

Based on the log in the op, the mkv from 1.9.2 is about 10s short. The movie time is 2.18.09.

I am thinking this may be corrupt timecodes in the source that MakeMKV is having trouble processing. I have posted recently about another older DVD that I have had trouble processing here: http://www.makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic ... 124#p39124. I think that one is also timecode related.

I'll post back after I try some other things. It may be the case that MakeMKV has trouble with older DVDs (e.g., double-sided, DL).

I just tried processing the DVD with AnyDVD HD. The VIDEO_TS folder plays fine in vlc; the movie fills the screen and shows the correct running time. I created a mkv from that with 1.9.2 and it has the aforementioned two issues: 1. running time doesn't match; and 2. picture doesn't fill the screen.

One interesting note between this problematic DVD (All the President's Men) and the other I have posted about (L'Avventura) is that both get BUP mismatch warnings for VIDEO_TS_1 when compared with their respective VIDEO_TS.ifo. Each DVD has only one title - no extra fluff.

I wonder if some of the older sw just uses the indexes from Video_Ts_1 instead of the main ifo for DVDs with only one title. Weird.

Anyway, I think the problem is predominantly with older DVDs (> 10-15 years), and a bit with MakeMKV. I'll probably try to use pgcedit to get the ifo in a suitable format for MakeMKV to process properly.

I am also experiencing similar issues with older DVDs (Black Rain, Dances with Wolves for two examples).

I also had a similar problem with a newer, but not a 'latest' DVD (Fantastic 4) for which I was able to create an MKV direct from Disc using Handbrake (see http://www.makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=9028)

Thanks Pat.

For this particular "flipper" DVD, I pulled out the old DVD Decrypter folder, and fed the old folder to HB, which worked out nicely. I used the older folder bc the one I created recently with AnyHD had the same movie duration problems as the mkv from 1.9.2.

There are still 2 older DVDs I have trouble with: 1. L'Avventura; and 2. Seven Days in May. Otherwise, everything works very well.

DVD stores it's aspect ratio in two places, one in the inf (menu/playlist ) files and there's another set in the stream headers.

MakeMKV takes the streams from the vobs unaltered, so it doesn't change their headers to match what's in the ifos if there's a contradiction. With the ifos out of the picture there's nothing but the stream headers to indicate the aspect ratio, if they're wrong then the resulting MKV will be wrong too.

It has nothing to do with the age of the DVD, for whatever reason some DVDs were just encoded at the wrong aspect ratio even though the info in the ifos override them with the correct ones.

It's been a problem with MakeMKV forever, but I don't think DVD is a priority.

If you must use MakeMKV for these files, the best fix would be to extract the mpeg2 video tracks using MKVExtract, then run the resulting elementary streams through ReStream or DVD Patcher to correct the aspect ratio in their headers, then remux them into a new file.

Ndjamena - thanks for that feedback - still a bit beyond my abilities at the moment but I will have a good read of that link and see if I can sort it. At the moment using MKV to create a file on disc then running through HB is working for the majority of troublesome DVDs I have.
