DVD Drive Question

I understand that for bluray ripping, you need to be selective about the drive you use. What about DVD drives though? Can I pick up any dvd drive and use it with MakeMkv? I have a good deal of DVDs and don't really want to use my BD to rip them.

Also, I wasn't sure where to post this. Sorry if this is the wrong place.

Generally speaking MakeMKV will work with most any DVD drive. It isn't guaranteed to work with every drive nor in every scenario. For instance, MakeMKV might be able to make a DVD drive rip a disc with a different region code than the drive is set to, but it might not.

If you've got a DVD drive gathering dust somewhere it is definitely worth plugging it in and trying to use it. If buying used the price should be low enough that a broken drive or one that MakeMKV can't use shouldn't be much of a financial burden.

Thanks. I picked up a cheap $20 dvd drive. Seems to be working well. I do have some old ancient drives from early 2000s, I'd need to find a compatible enclosure for it. I'll look into it after the dvd drive fails.
