Hello everyone,
makemkv is such an awesome software but the aspect ratio issue is reaaly annoying.
I just convert ghost in the shell dvd and it changed the aspect ratio from 1.85:1 to 1.78:1.
and I've seen other people having the same issue with other dvd.
I heard you can fix this with mkvtoolnix but I hope makemkv itself will always choose the correct aspect ratio instead of relying on other software for the fix.
thank you very much for this amazing software.
Can you guys try to fix the incorrect aspect ratio issue?

Re: Can you guys try to fix the incorrect aspect ratio issue?
DVDs are always either 4/3 = 1.33 or 16/9 = 1.78. Other ratios are made by adding black bars to the sides or top and bottom.
You should see very small black bars at the top and bottom of your title. MakeMKV is just copying what is on the disk.

And there is the additional problem that some DVDs have "split" aspect ratio information - the track is different from the "whole disk" ratio, so... which is right?

In this particular case, why won't we make it ask us to choose between the two?
just like choosing which audio/subs we want.

This seems to happen about 0.5% of the time for me, usually first edition/early DVD releases, longernohuman wrote: ↑Sun Dec 07, 2025 12:56 amI heard you can fix this with mkvtoolnix but I hope makemkv itself will always choose the correct aspect ratio instead of relying on other software for the fix.
the good news, as you already mentioned mkvtoolnix fixes this very quickly (in about 5 seconds in my case).
Honestly pre selecting your ratio may cause you more problems in the long run, I’ve seen some janky DVD configs while backing up my collection, much easier to just check it visually and fix where necessary imo,
good luck!
