Brand-new DVD that plays fine on a DVD player, and in the DVD player app.
But when I run MakeMKV 1.16.5, I get the following errors when I try to open the disc:
MakeMKV v1.16.5 darwin(arm64-release) started
Optical drive "BD-RE MATSHITA BD-MLT UJ240ES 1.21 HK18 105982d" opened in OS access mode.

Tried again and got more messages:
MakeMKV v1.16.5 darwin(arm64-release) started
Optical drive "BD-RE MATSHITA BD-MLT UJ240ES 1.21 HK18 105982d" opened in OS access mode.
Using direct disc access mode

Title #1 has length of 34 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
Cells 9-end were skipped due to cell commands (structure protection?)

Cells 27-end were skipped due to cell commands (structure protection?)
Title #4 in broken titleset was skipped
Title #5 in broken titleset was skipped
Title #6 in broken titleset was skipped
Failed to open disc
Failed to open disc
This seems to be copy protection and not a bad disc (the disc plays fine otherwise.)

I should mention I can't get Handbrake (with libdvdcss installed) to rip this successfully, either.

I haven't ripped a DVD since about 2005!! Anyway, does the ole DVDShrink application still work? That's what I used to use way back when...
Cheers

I'm on a Mac, so it's not available to me. (I have access to a Windows PC, so maybe I will give it a try if I get the chance.) Part of me thinks it's unlikely that a 15-year-old app would more likely work than apps updated in 2021... but you never know.
Thank you for the suggestion!

Is that drive powered via USB? Does it have two USB connectors and are they both connected either to the computer or two a powered USB hub? I wonder if your drive is running out of power.

Great call! That was the problem! (Or at least, -a- problem. I'd suspected power might be an issue, but I never thought it would manifest itself with those kinds of errors.)
Thank you!
