Region 1 DVDs such as Silence of the Lamb fail to rip

#1 Post by drguiom » Tue Dec 10, 2019 9:10 am

This seems to affect all region 1 DVDs on my setup although they play fine with VLC and the standard DVD player.

I cant work out what the issue would be. These DVDs are old, I have had them years so maybe this was never worked around?

Setup:

MakeMKV (registered) v1.14.7 on OSX

Log entry as follows:

Saving 2 titles into directory /Volumes/NAS STORE/Videos/RAW VIDEOS/SILENCE_LAMBS_4X3LB

Only the MakeMKV support (Mike) knows the meaning of the Debug Codes.

Try it with deselecting all subtitle tracks, maybe it help. But anyway, really ... 4:3 Letterbox? Sounds like a DVD from the start of the DVD time. Better use a newer DVD or better Blu-ray in 16:9 format. This is a great movie which should not be viewed in VHS quality.

yes I get the quality issue, this was more to understand the meaning and root cause of the error as its affecting all region 1 DVDs

How do I get a description for the error codes?

ok so the subtitles track generates the error. The track is as follows:

Subtitles CC->Text English (Lossy Conversion)

is the conversion process failing as maybe missing dependencies (guessing)

CC (Closed Caption) subtitles needs the external utility "ccextractor" to convert it to text subtitles.

If you search in the forum, you can find many many threads and problems with CC subtitles.
Good Luck :)

I had read that ccextractor was bundled with the OSX releases but it would seem you need to "brew install" it.

still failing to extract the Subtitles track though, investigating why
