Ripping Music/Concert DVDs with Multiple Quality Audio Tracks

Post by lucas08 »

I am in the process of ripping my music DVD collection using MakeMKV and have been selecting the highest quality audio track as I will primarily be viewing/listening to the content in a 5.1 home theater setting; however, I would also like to retain the ability to enjoy the videos on a PC with a simple 2-speaker setup.

If you rip a DVD with both the, say, "LPCM Stereo" and "DD Surround 5.1" audio tracks, will the file be read appropriately depending upon where it is played (i.e., on which stereo system)?

Your 2-channel PC will likely play the 2-channel portion of the 5.1 audio, if it's the primary audio stream. Just because a track is "7.1", "5.1", or whatever, they are built from the 2.0 audio that is the base. It's part of the audio design.

If the LPCM stream is "primary" (first found), it will likely be the one your "5.1" system feeds from, unless you tell the audio to use the 5.1 stream.
