Hey any insight anyone can give me would be great.
Using MakeMKV works pretty good for me, but I've always had one issue. I cannot rip DVDs. never, not once any disc I put in either fail reading or just sits and spins.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. My current drive is a BD-RE TSSTcorp BDDVDW SE-506CB TS01
Never been able to rip a DVD
Re: Never been able to rip a DVD
Without more information it is hard to say.
Does MakeMKV see a disk in the drive?
Can you access the files on the disk through the operating system?

Re: Never been able to rip a DVD
Ok So I ran some tests
I fired it up today and saw there was a Make MKV update, So I installed the updated.
First thing I did was put in a disc I had tried many times before (Leverage Season 1 disc 1) and for the first time the disc opened I was able to select tracks and start a rip.
The first episode ripped perfectly and then I an error say failed and device no longer available. so I ejected the disc, closed out of MakeMKV, reopened and put the disc back in. This time the disc fails to open Info and log below:
Then I switched over to a different disc I've had trouble with (Gundam Seed Vol 1) and that disc would not open either. Information and log below:
I can open the disc through windows explorer and can open the VOB Files in VLC (though they seem pixely and choppy) also disc plays opening the disc with VLC.
Let me know what other information you would like/need that I can try to gather.

Re: Never been able to rip a DVD
It's an external drive?
It looks like MakeMKV is losing the connection to the drive while in operation.

Re: Never been able to rip a DVD
So first off, Thank You
Ok, so this is where I just hang my head in shame.
Yes its an external drive
Yes the port was fully powered.
However, a switch of the cable itself seemed to resolve this issue. Your suggestion of the power issue made me think that maybe the cable just wasnt pulling its weight. so I swapped it out with a cable I believe came with my Nintendo Switch Pro controller. and sure enough, now I can rip DVDs.
So thank you. You helped resolve an issue I've had for years that I would have just kept ignoring if my OCD didnt want all the videos on my new plex server to be in the same file format.
What I don't understand though is, why did this still work for Blu rays? Had the drive failed when reading Blu-Rays I would have thought to check the port and/or the cable. But it didn't fail, I've literally ripped 100+ blu rays with this drive with that cable in that port.
Thank you again. (6 dvds ripped in the last 2 hours)

Re: Never been able to rip a DVD
It could well be that the drive just doesn't go fast enough on BDs to hit the power limit.
I first learned about the problem about a decade ago, when someone told me that every time he printed to his USB printer, his USB disk drives shut down.
