New install on Windows 11 cannot open most DVDa

Post by NickBR »

I have a new PC with Windows 11 so I installed the latest MakeMKV beta (v1.17.3).

However, fresh from install it cannot open most DVDs I try.
It did open one disc but failed to rip:

MakeMKV v1.17.3 win(x64-release) started
Using direct disc access mode
Title #1 was added (18 cell(s), 1:26:15)
Operation successfully completed
Saving 1 titles into directory C:/Users/NickRamsey/Videos
Error 'OS error - This device does not exist' occurred while reading '/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB' at offset '0'
Error 'OS error - This device does not exist' occurred while reading '/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB' at offset '0'

Error 'OS error - This device does not exist' occurred while reading '/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB' at offset '0'
Failed to save title 0 to file C:/Users/NickRamsey/Videos/A1_t00.mkv
0 titles saved, 1 failed

All the discs I have tried are ones I have already ripped with the same version of MakeMKV on my Windows 10 machine using the same USB BR/DVD drive.

Why would the same drive, with the same discs and the same version of MakeMKV work perfectly on Windows 10 but not on a brand new Windows 11?

Interesting!

The port is specified to charge external devices at 3.0A so one would assume it could supply sufficient power for a USB optical drive...

Edit: Quite right though, plugged in another port and Bingo! Looks like I have a faulty port on a new machine.

Thanks!
