The Office (UK) Issues

#1 Post by phadion01 » Wed Nov 12, 2025 5:57 pm

Hi everyone, it's my first time on this forum.

I am having trouble opening my DVD copy of The Office (UK) in MakeMKV. I've got the 4 disc set from BBC video, The Office - Complete Series one & two and the special. Region 1 release. Brand new, bought it sealed.

I have an external uhd blu-ray drive, flashed. All drive and disc info is pasted below. I've ripped plenty of 4k and blu-ray discs with no trouble, this dvd is the first time I am having an issue. Discs 2 and 4 (extras and the christmas special) rip with no issues. Discs 1 and 3 (the actual episodes) won't even open. Since only the main content won't open, I am thinking it is some kind of weird dvd encryption MakeMKV can't crack, rather than a disc issue. I have tried cleaning the discs and running MakeMKV as admin. Discs 1 + 3 will not open in any ripping software that I have tried, and they crash VLC when I try to open em there. I also tried using another external dvd drive I had lying around and had the same issue. All 4 discs play perfectly in my blu-ray player.

Here is what MakeMKV gives me when I try opening disc 1:

MakeMKV v1.18.2 win(x64-release) started
Using LibreDrive mode (v06.3 id=4C194CE2C4D1)
Using direct disc access mode

Error 'Scsi error - HARDWARE ERROR:TIMEOUT ON LOGICAL UNIT' occurred while reading '/VIDEO_TS/VTS_08_1.VOB' at offset '0'

If I keep running it, I just get a bunch more timeout errors followed by a message that disc failed to open.

Suggestions? Thanks!

USB slim-line drive?

Make sure you have adequate power to the drive. Be sure you are using 2 x USB connections or AC Adapter in addition to the USB data connection.
