Although MakeMKV can rip DVD discs, it is not the best software for doing so. There are plenty of other software applications that are better at ripping DVD discs. MakeMKV is the best when it comes to BD/UHD ripping though!!

This proclamation is news to me, so I'd like to get some details! I'm new at this, but have now ripped over 700 DVDs and BDs in the past 3 weeks. In general I've noticed that MakeMKV seems to struggle more frequently with DVDs than with BDs, and it's failed completely on about 10 DVDs. I initially used Handbrake, but concluded that sucked b/c it required me to re-encode everything, resulting in "Generation Loss".

So... can you provide some recommendations for a few of the "plentiful options" for ripping DVDs??

Mind you, I have not even looked at a DVD since 2007 as they are such poor quality but before BD, I mainly used DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter to rip DVD's. There's also DVDFab, WinX DVD Ripper, 1Click DVD Copy among others...
Cheers :D

So you haven't burned a DVD in almost 20 years yet you confidently claim that there are plenty of better options than MakeMKV before proceeding to list a bunch of abandonware and overly commercialized crap. This sounds a lot like your unsolicited opinion on Macs: worthless.

That's alright. No one asked for your opinion either!

I guess I should have qualified my request for information... instead of "plentiful options", I probably should have said "plentiful options that are maintained, and yield better results than MakeMKV".

I've gotta' agree w/ francocho here... the "plentiful options" you've listed look like dogs to me... I wish you hadn't gotten my hopes up. If you've not ripped a DVD in 20 years, most would question the veracity of your recommendations, eh?

Do you have a different drive you can try? Since it is a DVD, just about any drive will work, even an old Apple SuperDrive if you've got one collecting dust in a closet.
FWIW: My experience (recent and limited as it may be) suggests that the drive DOES make a difference - on DVDs and BDs.

I've been at this about 3 weeks, and have ripped approx 700 DVDs + BDs. I estimate that approx 75-100 have been BDs; the balance are DVDs. I've used 3 drives: a Pioneer, an Asus, and since yesterday a Buffalo. Until today, my results have been as follows:
  • Zero BD failures
  • Eight (8) DVD failures

I tried each of the 8 DVD failures in the new Buffalo drive. The Buffalo produced a "good" mkv file from 4 of the 8 DVD failures. All 8 failures had been thoroughly cleaned, and failed previously in both the Asus and the Pioneer drives.

I've returned the Pioneer drive to the merchant b/c it seemed flimsy and definitely slower than the Asus. Also, I inadvertently upgraded the firmware on the Pioneer... but have since learned that the "LibreDrive" firmware only works with Windows?! (Suggesting it's not actually firmware at all.)

Final data point: I had my first BD failure today using the Buffalo drive! Afterwards, I moved the failed BD from the Buffalo to the Asus (no cleaning as it was a new BD), and the Asus ripped it without a hitch! Again, limited results suggest the drive itself does make a difference.

YMMV...
