Whenever I get this ILLEGAL REQUEST message, I close MakeMKV, then run VLC from Videolan to open and begin playing the disk, just to get past the menu and start the main feature. Then while it is playing, I open MakeMKV and tell it to open the same drive. MakeMKV then has no problem. I then exit and close VLC because it is no longer needed now that it has extracted the DeCSS key and unlocked the disk in the drive for MakeMKV.
If the disk gets ejected, the same trick will need to be repeated to unlock the drive again for that disk.
For most disks, MakeMKV does not give this error.
For the ones where it does, this trick has always worked for me.

If you have a BD (BlueRay) drive added to your PC and a BD disk and get the same message, try using the free Laewoo BlueRay player software. It should be able to perform the same unlocking trick.

Hope this helps people who have been getting this error.

For some reason the DVD I have this error message will not open with VLC also. I plays on regular DVD player. Any idea why? thanks

I'm getting this error when ripping the last episode (13) of season 3 of Samurai Jack on DVD. Everything else on the disc rips fine, and playing it back in VLC works as well. MakeMKV gives up at exactly 527.4MB of the episode ripped.

I tried the trick from John Lord above but it didn't help in my case. :(

After ripping hundreds of Bluray, UltraHD and DVD discs this single episode of this disc is the only thing I've found that MakeMKV can't handle. Strange!

I'm getting this error, and I paid for the registered version (This version expires: Never). I'm trying to rip the DVD that came with Iron Maiden's 2006 album, A Matter of Life and Death. I wouldn't think copy protection would throw off MakeMKV from something this old...

hi guys

i'm getting this "scrambled sector" error. i'm seeing in some of the posts that to get around this one needs to run makeMKV as an administrator. i just have no idea how to do this. do i first need to get the paid version of the app?

i'm running v. 1.15.3 on a mac.

any guidance would be appreciated. thank you!

"Run as administrator" is an option on Windows, where you can right-click on an application, and select "run as administrator", or change the properties of the shortcut to include running it as an administrator.

The Mac has the same thing, but I can't give you advice on how to invoke it. This might help (found with a quick google search):

Sorry to resurrect this thread, I stumbled on it while trying to figure out this error.

Just wanted to report this still happens, I had never seen it until this afternoon when I was ripping a stack of Criterion discs. I started the I Am Curious Boxed Set Yellow Disc and it came up.

Disc is clean and free of scratches, brand new right out of the box.

No response needed, just wanted to report.

Running from my standard Linux account...

I got this error trying to rip a CD, then I tried with foobar2000 and had no problem. In fact, now I use foobar for ripping CDs because I can convert it straight to opus (or whatever format you fancy)

What does that have to do with DVDs? Decoding a CD's audio tracks is quite different from decoded encrypted video...

I only get it on one drive DVD+R-DL HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GUD0N LW01 KVNG6ME3758 (same disk in another drive is fine, any other disk in another drive is also fine)

Code: Select all

Registered just to say thanks!

I was backing up my 15-disc Justice League aninated series collection and was confused when only the last 2 discs popped up with this error. Running as admin fixed the first disc error, and playing the second disc in VLC, then running MakeMKV while it was playing helped bypass the error on that one.

I was afraid the minor scratched/potting or possible warping on the discs was giving them read errors, but it seems all is well. Though I haven't played the backups yet to verify. Anyways, thanks!

Old Thread, I know. But I have a fix that isn't mentioned here. I see this on occasion while using makemkvcon64 under Windows on DVD's. The specific case I am addressing is when you see this during disc scanning and the sector always seems to be 1048576. I agree with prior poster that this is a nuisance error message and that the MKV files made are correct.
However, if you really don't want to see it, I can make it go away without Admin permission or running VLC hacks. Just CTRL-C in the command window to stop makemkvcon64, delete any output file if you let go that far, and up arrow to start it again. The second time the message doesn't appear (so far).
