How to support x265

Hello,

This is my first post in this forum and I was wondering if you know what settings I need to support x265 when ripping DVDs since it may be the best quality you can get

You're not going to get x265 when RIPPING DVDs (or Bluray), as that isn't a supported format for those disks.

You can CONVERT to x265 using a number of tools, including handbrake, and the result will be smaller than the original DVD rip.

But your original rip will be in the format used by the disk.

DVDs usually use MPEG2 for the video tracks
BluRays usually use x264 for the video tracks
UHDs usually use x265 for the video tracks

As already said you can rip the movies and transcode them via e.g. Handbrake.

"x264" and "x265" are not codecs, but open-source implementations of encoders for H.264 (aka MPEG-4 part 10, aka MPEG-4 AVC) and H.265 (aka MPEG-H part 2, aka MPEG-H HEVC), respectively.

Also, there are lots of extant BD releases with MPEG2 and Microsoft/SMPTE VC-1 video.

Almost nobody producing commercial discs is using x265. I can count the number of discs I've dumped on my two hands (and I've dumped nearly 1000 Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray discs) that has metadata showing it was authored with x265.
