VC-1 and Roku 3

Super Newb here, so please bear with me. I am ripping blu-rays to a hard drive for playback on my Roku 3. Has been working great until I tried ripping The American. Whenever I tried to play it on the Roku 3 I would get audio but no video. After several different attempts I finally noticed that when MakeMKV reads the disk from my computer's BD drive it says the main movie is in VC-1. Could this be the problem? If so how can I correct this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You would need to use a video encoder, such as Handbrake.

I'm assuming that I will need to rip the movie first via MakeMKV and then recode it using Handbrake?

Correct. I'd use Handbrake on the "High Profile" setting and not fiddle with any settings, the Roku should handle the output just fine.

Handbrake was difficult to get acclimated to, I did end up messing with some of the settings just because I love DTS. It worked perfectly and I reduced the movie size from approximately 20gigs to around 5-6. Thanks so much for your help!

By the way, the best thing about Handbrake is that it's Open Source.
