MakeMKV & Handbrake

So, I use Makemkv for my 4k-n-1080p movies, then I just upgraded my computer to a AM5 9950x overclocked @ 5.8Ghz mild load and full load @ 5.5Ghz.

So, the way I set my movies up is, makemkv my movies full size for home with PC-HDD > Network > nvidia shield android tv pro 2019 > 4k/1080p.

I have a 2TB SD card in my android phone, and now since I have this sweet am5 system 16 core/32 threads, I can now convert my huge movie files depending on the movie like Apollo 13 30GB for use on my SD card on my android phone and here are sweet settings for handbrake.

Minimizes 30GB or so down to around 4-7GB with great quality and with AC3/DTS-HD MA/DTS etc, depending the movie in 15 minutes conversion time! With 9950x.

Life is sweet with all this put together, makemkv/LG 4k drive I bought from a member here/PC/sweet network setup/nvidia shield/TV/MOVIES! handbrake/android.

Sweet settings.

Then I slap the new converted mkv into mkvtoolnix and edit the fields like english and title/sound/pgs etc and then multiplex so everything is proper in the mkv, and is fast multiplex on a m.2 ssd. Like 10-20seconds.

What do you do for a 4K rip? Do you resize it down to 1080? Do you tone map from HDR to SDR?

I just makemkv my 4k's to HDD "need to multiplex em to edit the fields on mkvtoolnix to make the mkv proper, like hevc dts language for each selection of vid sound subs etc." "rehaul em". Example: 1080p: Like Dances with Wolves I need to multiplex it cuz I have two subtitle set for this movie, English + Sioux language and a second set Sioux language in which when I multiplex this move, I need to set all proper fields and set Sioux language subs as default. I have a lot of work ahead of me to do after I downsize my 1080p's.

Does this turn out better than original 1080p format like example VC-1?

Never thought of doing 4k>1080p.

I make 1080p versions of movies where I have the 4K disc but not a regular blu-ray. They can look pretty good… it just depends on your settings in Handbrake of course. By downsampling a 4K to 1080p, you can end up with a file about the same size as if you were encoding a regular blu-ray. It'll look as good as any regular blu-ray you encode, which means it'll look fine on any mobile device you put it on. It takes Handbrake longer to do this work but that shouldn't be surprising.
