Getting dropped frames with Kodi and VLC when playing 4k mkv files

I've ripped several UHD blu rays to mkv and am using VLC and Kodi to play back the files on an NVIDIA Shield Pro. About half of the files I play start to drop frames, usually after an hour or so of playback. This is most apparent in shots of fast moving objects such as a spaceship moving from right to left, as in Revenge of the Sith. If I pause playback, the problem usually goes away. Is this because VLC and Kodi have difficulty keeping up with the high data rates of video files ripped from UHD discs?

Sadly, this happens to me with all devices. The Shield has notorious problems with stuck and/or dropped frames, I've had 2 of them and they both suffered this. This even rarely happens in my Panasonic DP-UB820 player. The least next to that is Coreelec on a Ugoos AM6B+ or Homatics Box R 4K Plus. Then comes the 2019 Shield Pro, which seemingly 100% of the time suffers stuck and/or dropped frames (I don't use these anymore for that reason).
Coreelec isn't very user convenient, for instance you should bet on having a remote IR/CEC problem (like can't wake up the device from sleep). That said, next to using a standalone player it is the cleanest playback I've found, but it's not perfect. For instance in horizontally panning scenes, sometimes you see frames drop which causes a slight stutter in the video, but it doesn't persist every 5 seconds or at some seemingly fixed interval like it does with the Shield.

Damn! So you haven't found a solution? I'll try it with my new Xbox.
